Introducing No Fuss Gus!

Gus Mercurio the adorable little no fuss Kelpie is a 5 year old 22 kilo dream boat

We struck gold with our first ever foster dog! Gus is such a gentleman, obviously he has been very well trained.

He is not at all pushy or demanding although he will come and put his head on your knee when he wants a pat.

He is extremely cuddly and loves interaction with all humans.

He is a five year old kelpie and very smart. He always checks in before doing things – e.g. he won’t go in the front door or hop in the car until he is invited to. The first couple of times I had to lift him into the car but once he realized he was allowed to he now hops in and out on his own. He needed no such invitation to hop onto the back of the ute – once the sides were dropped he jumped up with great alacrity and plopped himself down behind the cab. The back of the ute parked under a tree in the backyard is his happy place, although on really hot days he gets underneath.

FAVORITE THINGS

Gus is always up for a walk and he really comes alive when he gets out of suburbia. If you are looking for a running mate, Gus is not your man but a brisk walk is always appreciated. He no longer has the speed but he will happily ramble for two hours.

INTERACTION WITH HUMANS

Gus is always well mannered but keen to meet everyone. We have not noticed any issues with anyone, he is a very friendly, laid back kind of boy.

OBEDIENCE/TRAINING

Gus sits and stays on command and comes when called. He is very eager to please and not at all demanding.

He responds to whistles.

ANIMAL SOCIAL SKILLS

Gus has not paid much attention to cats or kangaroos if they stay still but once they move he has the urge to chase but is easily controlled. He seems quite happy to meet other dogs but then goes on his way doing his own thing. I have not seen him playing with another dog. He walks well on a lead and we have not heard him bark at all. He has made little whiney noises when he wanted to meet a dog but I wouldn’t let him ( I did not know how safe it was).

OTHER ANIMALS

Gus is very sweet and polite with other dogs and we have seen no issues whatsoever

As per our policy if another dog in the home we seek a swet gentle female who is well socialsed with others

FOOD

Gus is currently eating a mix of dry and wet food. ). He is not greedy. He will eat the meatroll straight away but then grazes on the kibble.

He is not pushy or demanding and does not beg for food.

INDEPENDENCE

We have not left Gus on his own yet. He is happy to sleep outside on the ute or inside on the couch during the day so cant see it being an issue as he is very laid back

BATH AND HYGIENE

Gus did not cause any difficulty for us when bathing him but he did not particularly enjoy it either. He is very stoic, just stood and let us get on with whatever we felt was necessary. He does enjoy a good brushing and now has a lovely shiny coat.

SLEEPING

Gus sleeps on the couch in our family room. He has shown no interest in the bed supplied. On the second night he was with us he did sneak in and sleep on the bed next to me ( not discouraged by me) but has not shown any interest in doing this again. He puts himself to bed at night as I tend to be up late.

EXERCISE

We try to get in two walks a day of at least half an hour but prefer to give him one half hour and a long walk around two hours if possible.

He is quite content, and though always ready for a walk he is happy to relax at other times.

INSIDE THE HOME

Gus’s behavior in the house is exemplary. He is fully toilet trained and not at all destructive. He has waited to be told to get on the couch when first with us but has accepted now that it’s allowed and is happy to rest quietly.

He did wake me at around 5 one morning by whimpering beside my bed. I got up and let him out and after attending to his business he came back in and settled back onto his couch.

MEDICAL ISSUES

Gus did have a little stiffness when he arrived and we put him on a 4 week once a week course of zydax and this had improved dramatically

He might have the very early start of arthritis in the back hip but this can be managed on a yearly basis if it flares up again

IDEAL HOME

The only requirement Gus seems to have is that he likes to have his humans around. He has quickly become attached to my sons when they visit and so far we have not seen any negative behaviors. He is absolutely adorable, very handsome and just wants to be loved. Not a runner, not demanding or aggressive, just a beautiful boy suited to a home where there is someone around who wants a BFF or a valued family member
