About Red - 3.5 Year Old Kelpie X (On Trial)
Are you looking for a sweet, loyal, companion to share your days with? Someone with a fine physique, sweet, gentle nature and angelic amber eyes perhaps? Then, look no further than Red!
Red is a kelpie x, about 3.5 years old who just adores his people. He really has the sweetest nature, always happy for a cuddle or just to melt at your feet. He is calm and excellently behaved around children. He is generally happy around other dogs and loves to play chasey and snuggles with his foster sister. He may get a little too excited so needs a suitable friend and slow introduction. He enjoys an active lifestyle and being a typical kelpie, will need the opportunity to exercise his body and mind daily. Red would make an excellent running partner because boy does he like to run! But Red is also very happy to snooze in the yard as well or be wherever you are.
Red walks well on a lead once he gets the initial excitement out, although distractions do get the better of him at times and he can pull very strongly. As Red is a very muscular body type, he is physically, a very strong dog so he needs a competent handler that can manage this and redirect his focus. He is currently working on his focus and impulse control and is responding well to training.
Red wouldn't do well around cats or pocket pets as he does exhibit a high chase drive. He is working on his recall and needs some more practice with the added challenge of distractions.
Having said all that, Red can actually be quite timid and has a very soft nature in general so he needs a handler who is the same and experienced in positive reinforcement that will bring out the best in him. .
He is highly food motivated and intelligent which is great for training. Red can ‘sit’, ‘come’, ‘wait’, ‘go to mat/ bed’ and we're currently working on ‘down’.
He eats well and enjoys his puzzles and treat toys alot. He currently sleeps inside, all night. Red would make the right people an excellent, beautiful family dog or companion to spend the days with.
