Have you owned a young Rottweiler before? Yes? Well, you might know what you are in for then! No? Be prepared for a dog with a big heart, big head and a big personality. Shiva doesn’t have a mean bone in her body, she’s an inquisitive, exuberant love bug that just wants your time and guidance.
She LOVES her toys. She will knock down the toy bucket and play with each and every toy in there for hours on end. She runs around with a rope in her mouth, swinging it about like a nunchuck champion and then she brings it over all slobbery so you’ll grab the other end for a game of tug.
She has the sweetest puppy-like face and when you speak to her, her head tilts are heart melting. But don’t be fooled by those innocent eyes! Playful antics always ensue and she’s one determined gal.
Shiva’s foster carer works full time and she happily stays home and sleeps most of the day away waiting for her to return. We are yet to find any garden excavation projects or destruction of any kind (unless you count stealing the toilet roll from the bathroom) but she is restricted to a smaller section of the house and the full backyard via doggy door.
Whilst it was clear she hadn’t been given any training until arriving in foster care, she is super smart and food motivated so has been a stellar student. Her new mantra is ‘I must be calm’ and this training is something that must continue in her new home in order for her to reach her full potential. Those with no time or interest in training need not apply.
She’s dog friendly but very bouncy and too ‘in-ya-face’ annoying for most dogs. Preference would be to her being an only dog at this stage so you can devote your time and attention to her training needs. Otherwise, she would need a patient, large doggy companion that could withstand her constant playful antics.
Like most Rottweilers, she does have an irregularity in one hip - her femoral head sits low in the socket. She has been assessed by the vet and does not require surgery however does need preventative care to avoid issues later. This includes daily Antinol Rapid supplements and Pentosan injections in future. Great care should also be taken in keeping her nice and lean to relieve undue pressure on her hips.
