Oh gosh, where do we start with this sweet girl…
Mithril was supposed to be part of our last litter program, which is where if the owner surrenders the entire litter of kittens to us, we will desex the mum cat free of charge.
When Mithril’s babies were 6 weeks old and ready to come into care, we were contacted by the owner saying that the babies weren’t doing so well. One of our carers immediately collected 2 kittens and took them straight to our specialist carer because they were in a bad way. They were 6 weeks old but only weighed a fraction of what they should, and were quite literally on deaths door. 1 of the kittens couldn’t be found initially, but was located the next day, so our vet carer went to pick him up, and upon seeing Mithril, convinced the owners to let her come to BFF to receive the vet care she needed. She was literally skin and bone, covered in fleas, anaemic, low body temp, and was barely moving. She wouldn’t have survived much longer without intervention.
With lots of love, round the clock care, and a heap of vet visits, Mithril slowly regained her strength. Then she had to learn how to be a loved indoor cat rather than a solely outdoor cat that was just thrown food on the ground to eat. She spent several weeks with some amazing carers who saw her through the tough weeks, then she made her way to another carer with multiple cats so that she could learn how to “cat”.
This has been a slow but rewarding process. She used to only walk around at night time and hide during the date, but now she will happily explore the house evening during the daytime (although she is much more confident at night). She initially wouldn’t use the litter tray until everyone was in bed, but she’s followed the example of the other cats and is perfect now. And lastly, she didn’t used to eat in front of you and now she does – you still need to serve her meal to her while she sits comfortably on her bed on the couch, but she will eat it straight away even while you are watching her – this is huge progress! Her fur is starting to gain some condition, and with a bit more time on quality food she is going to be an absolutely spectacular looking cat!
Mithril has bonded with the 24yo male in the house, and loves to spend time in his room snoozing away on the bed. When she’s in the main house she has a favourite bed on the couch that she watches everybody from, and she has started venturing out into the cat enclosure.
Mithril is currently in a foster home with multiple cats. She doesn’t really want to be “buddies” with any of them, but will happily co exist. She would be fine to live in a home with another cat or two if they were happy to give her space, but she would also be more than happy to be a solo diva.
Mithril is initially a little unsure of new people, but considering her background that’s understandable – but with a bit of time and patience she will be a loving girl who will be your shadow.
