Meet the incredibly gorgeous and sweet boy Diego.
This extremely stunning boy is a 5 year old Sarplaninac x Maremma weighing in at 46 kilos.
Diego will NOT be adopted to a suburban yard so please do not apply !
Diego came into the rescue after being used as a breeding dog and was treated very poorly before being dumped in a country pound some 4 months ago.
He was extremely emaciated, weighing in at just 23 kilos ( pretty much a bag of hair and bones.)
Diego has taken to poultry like a well fitted glove and we have spent the last 3 months allowing him to do what he was bred for…. Protect stock.
He showed great guardian dog traits from the day he arrived. With a mix of both LIveStock Guardian breeds she displays both traits. Wary of strangers like the Maremma and a fierce protector like a Sarplaninac.He does not allow other animals near his charges and the feathered girls are perfect;ly safe 24/7 in his care. Once he has your trust Diego is a loyal and loving boy who will listen to his handler and is eager to please.
Diego has never attempted to dig out of jump the fences
When he first arrived Diego was as breed true, very wary and aloof from his new surroundings but quickly settled into farm life well. Once we had exposed him to the poultry over a few weeks we realized this boy was a natural and he was given his own flock to protect within a month which he now lives with 24/7
As typical the only time he gets annoyed with the girls is when it's dinner time and the feathered ladies try to steal his dinner….. The daily routine is the same.. The girls steal his food. He barks at them and they run a meter and yup then they come back and it all starts again… Poor Diego never gets to eat in peace lol
Diego is on a diet of #Savourlife adult food with a mix of #Prime 100. He enjoys a bone once a week and sardines in oil to keep his skin and coat healthy.
Diego has now learnt the joys of being groomed. Every few weeks I take a camping chair out into the paddock and he calmly sits and enjoys a full
groom.He does require a strip between seasons in which I complete myself to remove all winter and spring coats which were very thick.
Diego as I mentioned earlier allows no other animals into his enclosure with his feathered friends. This includes dogs , and even the occasional rabbit has had a nasty surprise.
He is best suited as a solo worker as I doubt he would go well on duty with another dog.
Diego travels pretty well in the car and has had a few trips with no issues.
He loves and pat and a scratch and to be shown attention when you are in his paddock when you first enter but then goes off on his own way once you have fulfilled his pat request . lol
Diego being a livestock guardian in work will bark A LOT as is true to breed as anything near his paddock that moves he warns them to leave…
Please be mindful Diego is a working dog not a pet and as breed true BARK a lot to protect their charges is they feel they are in danger
The home we seek for our beautiful and precious boy must have the following to be considered
Large property with poultry to protect
Very secure fencing with a min of ringlock that is secured to ground and does not require restraining due to lack of tension.
Min of Livestock guardian breed experience or equivalent
