About Berni
Please only apply for this greyhound if you have:
- A loving single person or older couple
- Kids over 10 years
Berni is a delight to foster and acts somewhat younger than other 5 year old greyhounds I've known. She is easy going and friendly and likes her toys - happily throwing a soft toy in the air and then chasing it when it lands. However despite acting younger than her years on occasions and walks, like a true greyhound she enjoys spending most of her time at home snoozing.
She knows her name, and easily lets you know (by standing by the back door) when she needs to go to the toilet. She is fine getting in and out of the car by herself. Berni sleeps through the night quite happily, though has been known to practice her roaching (turning over and trying to stay upside down) when it's too hot to sleep.
She enjoys her walks and gets quite excited when she realises we're leaving the house. Knowing that longer walks happen when she gets in the car, she cheekily tries to steer me to the garage (hoping for a car trip to the park). But once she realises we're not taking the car, she happily trots down the driveway wagging her tail.
She is good with other dogs having made friends with all the small and medium dogs on walks in my neighbourhood but apart from sniffing and wagging a lot, she isn't keen to play chase with them.
She's attended a couple of greyhound walks at Jells Park and looks to be somewhat of a waterdog, loving to walk into and stand in the lake. She walks along quite happily with the other greyhounds, not causing a fuss and looks to be a dog who would possibly enjoy the company of being in a family with another medium/large dog. She would be at her happiest though if the other dog was a greyhound.
Berni has panus, which is a common condition in greyhounds and requires eye drops once a day to prevent any further loss of sight. The drops are soothing and she is fine with me administering her drops and takes this in her stride - especially as she gets a cuddle and a treat afterwards.
Berni's poorer eyesight means she will sometimes stop to check out things. Her habit of staring at the shadows of trees swaying in the breeze when lit up from street lights as the sun starts to go down is quite cute as she appears to be trying to make out exactly what she's seeing. But she responds readily to her name when I call her and happily continues on her walk.
I will miss her as she is a lovely girl and a great companion dog for someone living on their own. She has lots of life left in her and a sweet ladylike nature but she needs someone who is happy to manage her eye condition, which other than making walks interesting, doesn't bother her at all.
[Note: Under Victorian Law greyhounds must be on-leash at all times in public areas, including in off-leash parks or ovals]
