Otto - 3 Year Old Great Dane(On Hold 16/12/22)

Attention all BIG dog lovers! Meet Otto a 3-year-old Great Dane weighing in at close to 70kg.

Otto is a friendly, affectionate, and loyal gentle giant. He loves to be inside near you when you're home but is happy to stay outside for extended time if needed.

He meets and greets everyone with excitement and sometimes a destructive tail wag.

Otto likes his toys, especially large ones that squeak, and enjoys playing with them at the dog park or beach. Where he will happily play with other dogs (of all sizes).

He is not overly food orientated, so has been trained on high praise and pats. Knows commands e.g sit, stop, leave it, find, go toilet, on your bed, and is fully toilet trained.

Otto can become overly excited when on a leash, especially when strangers want to always pat such a large dog. This is manageable with a Halti collar. He will need ongoing training on walks to contain his excitement as if you’re not paying attention he could quite easily pull an adult over.

Be prepared to hear “that’s a horse, not a dog” a hundred times every walk. Once you’ve walked or played with Otto for an hour he is very content to lie on his bed for the remainder of the day.

Otto is great around adults and teens but can become jumpy and unsure around children/toddlers who grab and crawl toward him. So for that reason and due to his size, we are looking for a home with kids 12 and up.

He has never shown fear in storms or around large groups of people. He will let out a deep bark if someone/thing is out the front, but it quickly settled.

Being a big dog Otto’s cost of living is significantly higher (vet & food bills) and we would prefer someone with big dog experience but not necessary.

Otto is in foster care in the Newcastle, NSW area. They are not currently available for interstate adoption. The adoption fee is $500.00 and they are desexed, vaccinated, treated for fleas and worms and microchipped.
PLEASE NOTE: Dog Rescue Newcastle provides individual listings with specific requirements for each foster dog. If you submit an application or inquiry and DO NOT receive a response within 5 business days, please understand that you have not met the specific requirements for this dog. Please do not be disheartened or discouraged, this simply means you were not a suitable match at this time.
This organisation's adoption policy is moderate. What does this mean?

(1) The first step is to fill in our online Adoption Questionnaire: https://tinyurl.com/drnadopt
(2) If the questionnaire is approved we will arrange a property check so we can verify that your home and yard are suitable for the pet you've applied for.
(3) After that we will arrange for you to meet the pet, usually at the foster carer's home, nearby park or your home.
(4) If both sides agree, then you can pay for and adopt your new family member! The two week trial begins on the day of adoption.
