About Chickpea
Chickpea is a dynamite puppy who is looking to find her perfect forever home. Please ensure you ready her whole profile before applying as she does have some medical requirements.
This little puppy is a firecracker. At home she is miss confident and LOVES playing with her humans or the other resident dog. Out and about, she is generally a very happy go lucky puppy, but can sometimes be reserved in new situations or meeting new people and will need an experienced owner to continue her proper socialisation to ensure she isn’t overwhelmed.
This girl is loyal to a tee. She definitely picks her master and will do anything for them. She does best with someone around most of the time at home and would prefer an adult only home. She has been working on her toileting and will wee on command but is still doing the occasional poo inside if not managed closely enough. She is very food motivated and her basic training is coming along nicely.
Chickpea is gradually building up her independence and her foster carer is working on her ability to be left alone. She is okay with another doggy friend around, but she does still struggle alone. Her new owners will need to continue the work of the foster carer. Bath time is not her favourite but she is getting used to being cleaned and clipped regularly. Her new owner will need to continue her high grooming requirements as she is a non to low shedding dog and will require regular grooming.
She has gone on many adventures in the car. She travels best in a crate, with her bed, and prefers to see you. Her foster carer has been doing an exceptional job of socialising her with the big wide world. When out and about at cafes she will happily sit on her bed and lay there while you have a coffee.
Chickpea is a very affectionate dog and will sleep in your lap or next to you, and doesn’t mind being carried. She will snuggle her head into the neck and shoulder of her person if it is too much. Chickpea has been exposed to children, men, women, people with disabilities, cars, motorbikes, vacuum cleaner, mops, hair dryers (not a fan), lawn mowers, wheelchairs, all different surfaces… she has taken it all in her stride, and as long as she has you, she is fine with it.
She loves other dogs. She prefers dogs to humans. Due to her medical needs (see below) it is important her humans can manage her doggy interactions and not let her run at a million miles an hour. She will do well in a home as an only dog with someone home majority of the time or another confident and well trained dog who it will be easy to manage if Chickpea wants to play all the time.
Chickpea is cat friendly and could live in a unit, or house - she knows how to use the dog door. She will need to go on walks every day, and be provided with a high quality diet. She will need to be allowed inside as part of the family and provided a bed inside to sleep on at nighttime.
Please read her detailed medical notes below.
Medical notes
Chickpea came into care from a rural NSW pound after being surrendered by her breeder due to being diagnosed with bilateral luxating patellas.
Due to her age, our orthopaedic specialist vet was able to perform a surgery that realigns the surrounding tissues to try and stabilise the knees as she grows. This has a high chance of completely fixing her patella issues, but there is a chance she may need orthopaedic surgery down the track. Her new owners need to be prepared to do this surgery if the need occurs.
She is currently four weeks into her 6 week recovery period. Depending on when she leaves for her new home, her new family will need to ensure they continue her recovery properly. All details will be provided to prospective homes, but essentially involves crate rest and minimal exercise. We feel this down time is a good opportunity for her new family to get to know her and bond with her before heading out into the big wide world together.
She will need to be kept on a high quality diet and it is imperative she is never overweight as it will add extra stress to her joints. She will need to be kept on a joint supplement longterm.
She also has quite a quick respiratory rate. The vets investigated this, did chest X-rays and a physical exam and could not find anything of note. She may have other health concerns down the line, but at this stage she is a wonderfully happy and affectionate girl.
Full medical notes will be explained in detail to any prospective family, but please be aware she will need a family who can and will financially support whatever medical assistance Chickpea may have.

Don't see a breed attached to one of our dogs? That's because we don't breed label dogs of unknown genetic history. We can't guess at breeds but that's okay, because we can tell you about the dog's individual personality, character, and behaviour.
