Adoptions are tough at the moment and I’m really hoping to find my forever family to spend Christmas with as I would love a Santa present just for me. Something I’ve never had ????

Matey is a stunning Mastiff x of med size

Matey is a very friendly boy looking for a home with active people that would allow him to be part of their family with the ability to take him on lots of adventures as he loves exploring

At just 2 years old, weighing about 25kgs with the incredible Mr Fox colouring, big soulful eyes he is one handsome fellow.

Matey has been a gem of a boy to foster. He is a lovely natured boy who would suit a family or couple looking for a new active fur baby. He has a loving nature and just out to please his new forever family.

Human interaction

Matey loves people??. He will rest his head and paw on your lap and slowly try to climb onto your lap for a hug. He forgets is a larger boy lol

He will give big proper human-like hugs, by

leaning his head into the crease of your neck. This boy loves affection and hanging around his pack. He is a well natured dog with a heart of gold, he will shower you in unconditional love

He can be a bit jumpy and mouthy when excited, hopping on his back legs like a kangaroo. He does respond to a firm ‘no’ and sit. He does know his basic commands which is great and we hope his new humans continue his training as he is eager to learn

He has a loud bark that would serve well for a guard dog, but really he’s a big softy.

Obedience

He is quite obedient and has improved in the short time he has been with his carer

He will sit, stay (most of the time), knows drop, outside and on your mat. His recall is good in an enclosed area but in an open area we feel he would be distracted by other dogs and follow his nose so he has not been tested off lead in large open spaces.

He is not food oriented, so pats and praise are the best reward. He walks well on the lead around the streets and likes to sniff and leave his latest news on trees and bushes along the way. In parkland areas he’s much stronger on the lead as there are more distractions and he just is eager to explore as much as possible

Favourite things

What to do to make this boy happy? Water, water and more water !! He absolutely loves to swim and splash around so a family with access to water would be like doggy heaven to this boy. The only thing, water is like a ball to him. He’s obsessed!!so we have had him on a long rope or he would be out there all day splish, splashing away

Sleeping

Matey sleeps in a sunroom, he has a couch but prefers to sleep on the cool floor under the coffee table.

He doesn't cause any problems during the night, but he has free access to go to the yard via a back door.

Animal social skills and exercise

Matey is a high energy dog so does need a daily walk/ run/ swim

It would not be fair to home him in a small backyard as he needs space to run and play

At the park Matey will approach all dogs with hopeful enthusiasm. He enjoys the company and stimulation of other dogs and has been tested with two other dogs in a home. He is a young dominant dog, can be in other dogs faces at times which some dogs dislike so a new owner would need to be weary of this and ensure slow introductions with others dogs. He would suit a submissive female dog that is playful and similar in size but also fine as an only dog with a couple of doggo friends. He would benefit greatly from group dog training sessions for socialisation

Food

Matey is not a big eater. He frequently will leave his dry food for later if at all. When Matey is given food he will sit patiently and wait. Gentle in taking treats

Hygiene

Matey is house trained. He is able to use a doggy door. He had one accident in the house in the first couple of days but this is common for a dog in a new home.

He does have a medium coat so will need brushing as he does shed some hair. His winter coat seems to be a double coat and is still losing a few chunks. He enjoys his baths and a good scrub a dub dub

Travel

He has learned to travel well. He happily jumps into a open car and lies down. Occasionally will look out the back window and bark at another dog. This is not excessive

Inside the home

Matey is well behaved inside

He rarely jumps up on couches or the bed unless invited. Will sleep on his mat but would prefer to be right next to you.

He is a tall boy so can sniff the kitchen bench but responds to no when doing the wrong thing, you will need to keep benches food free just incase.

He has shown no destructive traits whilst in care

Outside time

Left to himself he'll nap and sniff the backyard, but he really would prefer to hang out aside his people lol

Initially he may bark and whimper when put out but it does settle quickly so he would suit a home where people are away from home for work for periods of time

Matey may bark at times if there are passers by or other dogs but generally he is well settled outside and will just sit near the door until his owners return. He does play play with toys,enjoys a cow hoof/ peanut butter kong or other natural treats to keep him stimulated during the day when on his own

Ideal home

A family who are looking for a dog to be part of their family inside as he loves being with people

An active family who will walk or run him daily

A beach/dam/pool so he can continue his love of swimming

Teenage kids are fine

Untested with cats

A submissive female (we do not adopt to dogs of same sex due to increase risk of not getting on)

A home with a reasonable backyard (not suited to unit or apartment living)
