Reg

Meet beautiful good boy Reg. In typical greyhound style he is a chill lounge lizard with the occasional zoomies around the yard. We don’t know much about his past – we don’t think his name was Reg, as he is only just starting to respond to it. We also don’t think he has ever been raced.

Reg doesn’t ’sit’ (Greyhounds find it very difficult to sit as their long spines and tight muscular hind quarters prevent a full sit) but he will fetch a ball and take it back to his bed. We ask to him to ‘wait’ before coming in and he is starting to get the hang of it. He is getting used to being inside and staying on his mat – he loves being inside with his people.

We feed him with his bowl lifted off the floor because of his height. He eats everything you put in his bowl (tablets don’t even need to be hidden – how good is that!) Greyhound people advise that you should wait at least two hours after your dog has eaten a meal before walking them and also feed two smaller meals a day instead of one. That's because walking your dog straight after a meal can cause large dogs to bloat, or even lead to gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV)

He has no issues with other dogs and is quite relaxed (not tested with cats; beware of any small animals with Greyhounds) He never jumps on you - but will jump along side you when you have his bowl - or you come home and he is excited to see you. Not sure how he is with little ones, he may accidentally knock them over as he is quite tall.

When I go outside, he will often walk alongside me with his head alongside my hip – I think he likes it when I pet him while I’m walking. He has never pushed me or knocked me off balance.

He sleeps outside and on cooler nights he has a coat. Once you put it on, he knows its bedtime. One cooler night I didn’t tuck him in and he whined until I put his coat on and got him on his bed. Storms don’t seem to bother him.

Absolutely loves chasing the hose (but if you tell him no - he will stop chasing it). We walk him with a halti – and he is heaven to walk!! He is great in the car – but you do need to lift him in the wagon. It’s quite easy as he is tall – you don’t have to bend. He’s 35kg, I just lift his front feet in and then lift his back end in. He settles in easily and can jump out no problems.

Reg has had a couple of toes on his back leg amputated in the past – we have no idea why.

His perfect family would be a semi-retired person/couple or a family with older kids. I know he would love to sleep inside if allowed and would love to potter around the garden with you.
