Hans is a 2 years old Pomeranian husky mix ed breed, although the Pom genes where obviously stronger. Hans has had a bit of a shaky start to life, he was bought from a breeder during covid, and was swiftly given away. In his second home he wasn’t receiving enough training, socialisation or TLC, and was ultimately surrendered and the home life wasn't stable and Hans wasn't coping.
Since being with SODR Hans has really come out of his shell and started to show his vibrant personality. Hans is a gentle little boy who loves to be close to his people, and loves to be gently fussed over. Due to his shaky start, he can take a moment to warm up, but once you gain is trust he becomes the perfect little lap dog and will happily curl up on your knee while you work at a desk.
This little fluff ball loves nothing more than a W A L K and knows the word “walkies”, and enjoys a good run with his person when given the chance. However, he does tend to pull on his lead, which will need further training but he is easily corrected. When walking, Hans can be vocal when he sees other dogs, however this is not out of aggression and more excitement, however his energetic approach can rile up other dogs and so further training will be needed to keep this in check. Since being in foster care this cheeky chappy has been socialised with 2 older female dogs, and one other older male, and once the initial curiosity is out of the way, he was performing his best bows trying to initiate play.
As mentioned, Hans takes time to warm up to people and can be anxious about certain parts of his body being touched, he will watch where your hands are going and may flinch if you move too quickly or if you touch him in areas, he’s unsure, which seems to be his side just out of his eyeline. However, given time, he will become more relaxed and trusting. Hans doesn't mind being lifted up, and knows the words "Up Up" for when he’s going to be picked up, and gets himself into position. He does not like being picked up under his arm pits and much prefers being scooped up gently, as most dogs do.
As a true Pom, Hans is affectionate but in a controlled manner. Although playful, he will not be the type of dog to climb all over you and get in your personal space (Staffy’s I’m looking at you). He will gently lay next to you on the sofa, or on your lap when your relaxing, but has no problem letting you know when he wants to play. He will often do this by gently mouthing your fingers. If this isn’t for you, re-direct he attention to a toy and play tug of war which is his favourite game. Hans can be quite aloof and will take himself to lay down away from hustle and bustle when he's needs some quiet time. But, ultimately he likes to be close to his people, and If given the chance he will sleep on your pillow at night ! But is also happy to sleep in his own bed too.
I think Hans will thrive in a slower household with no kids with someone is around ALOT of the time and who has time and patience to continue his training and socialisation. Hans would benefit from a submissive resident dog who is well socialised and isn't too excitable to bring him further out of his shell.
Some extra tid bits about Hans:
He is a fuss pot and a grazer, so leave some food out throughout the day.
Fully toilet trained and will go outside on command (wee wee)
Prefers gentle interactions and would be best suited for an older household
Is okay with other dogs when introduced properly
Has good recall in the house if you call his name, however recall off lead is unknown and will require continuous training.
Understands basic commands such as Sit, Wait, Wee Wee (for toilet) and WALKIES !
