About Bella
It is with pleasure we introduce Bella, who definitely is the epitome of her name. This sweet lady was surrendered to SAFE following the death of her owner. She has always had the company of another dog and her owner(s) or foster carers, so we're not sure how she would fare if left along for long periods of time. This will be a consideration when comparing applicants.
Bella is a very happy little dog who loves lots of cuddles and affection. She is never demanding or expecting anything from you; just looks and observes everything, and is always interested. And while she may be getting on in years, she's still one smart cookie - it only took one encouragement to use the dog door and now she comes and goes as she pleases. She often sits outside in the early morning sun for a bit of a snooze. While compatible with other dogs in the house, Bella is not very well socialised at the dog park, and will need more work on her lead-walking. You won't need treats for training (she responds quickly to gentle one syllable commands), but Bella won't ever turn food down. You'll need to actively manage her intake as she could still stand to lose a bit more weight!
Soft toys are her favourite things and she will play tuggey and chasey with a companion dog.
Bella's favourite place to relax is on the sofa or on a soft chair, under a rug. She doesn't have much jumping power so will need a foot stool to get up and down without injuring herself. She has turned her nose up at soft dog beds on the floor. She may come to you for a cuddle when you are sitting watching television, but in general is not a 'lap dog'. Fastidious in her toileting, Bella frequents the same spot amongst the plants in the garden, and will also use a mat for toilet if required. Her clean and tidy habits are also evident licking the food bowl and/or any spills very clean indeed!
An excellent guard dog, Bella will bark to alert you of any strange noises. However her foster carer says she has relaxed noticeably as she has become familiar with her new home and the accompanying noises.
We hope you're prepared for a sleeping companion as with you is where Bella wants to sleep. She will crawl under the bedding and then not move until you wake. That's when she really shows her affection, with cuddles into your neck. This could possibly be retrained with time and patience, but we think it's been a lifelong habit.
If you're ready to keep Bella in the style she's accustomed to, please apply!
