About Sandy Gem
Sandy Gem is a happy boy who loves to engage with his humans as much as possible. This handsome boy is hard to resist when he insists on the maximum cuddles and affection from his favourite humans. Sandy loves to nestle in your embrace, getting the best full body hug while you find all the best spots to scratch and tickle him. Ecstasy.
In his foster home he loves to be close by to keep you company and is curious to know what’s going on. Sandy is learning to live in a loving home very quickly, happy to have the companionship of his two foster siblings while his humans are at work. In his foster home, Sandy loves to play with his toys. He prefers toys to chew. He will cherish a special toy and carry it around the house. Sandy loves to play fetch with you in the back yard too.
Sandy loves to set out for his daily walks, happy with 20 to 30 minutes exercise before heading back home for a snooze. Such hard work.
On his walks Sandy is becoming more comfortable with the sights and sounds such as noisy traffic or passing by the basketball court. He’s still not a big fan of screaming children in the playground. Sandy is happy but excitable to meet most medium and large dogs on his walks but hasn’t quite worked out smaller snappy dogs and doesn’t appreciate off-loads dogs. Sandy is happy to be redirected to move on and ignore them.
Sandy has learnt to jump into the car and enjoy his car rides. He is up for any adventure with you.
Sandy is your goofy, friendly and playful companion, ready to give you all the love and affection you both deserve.

Adoption details
Dogs are pack animals and Greyhounds, in particular, are very familiar with being surrounded by other dogs in their racing kennel environment. For this reason, when left alone without people or other dogs for company, they can be prone to separation anxiety which can manifest in destructive and/or noisy behaviour. Yes, they may "grow out" of it after a few weeks in their new home, but why put the dog through that stress to ultimately live all day alone, while everyone is at work? As a result we do not rehome dogs into households where they are left on their own for more than 4 hours per day, without either people or another dog for company.
During the COVID crisis, not all of our rescued Greyhounds will have the usual socialisation with other dogs so we may advise to use a muzzle in some situations until the dog is fully socialised.

Following your initial application, we conduct a home check. Our dogs are placed on a two week trial. The adoption fee is paid at time of placement and reimbursed if the trial is unsuccessful.
