Special Needs: Theo arrived to us with a terribly damaged eye which then required removal, so he is now our resident pirate pony! This doesn’t affect him much at all, he just needs someone to talk to him to let him know they’re there if you approach him from that side.
Adoption Fee: $250 this is to help cover the many costs associated with rehabilitating our horses
Theo has had quite a tough life before he managed to find his way to the sanctuary at 20+ years old. He found himself in quite a predicament at the sale yards with a seriously damaged eye and quite malnourished, he was destined for the knackery truck until a lady saw him and snapped him up to save him from that fate.
Despite trying all she possibly could to help Theo she struggled to find the appropriate veterinary care (living in a remote area) and reached out to us to bring him to the sanctuary to further his rehabilitation.
As soon as he arrived, we arranged to have Theo taken in to the Eye Clinic for Animals where we could have an ophthalmologist examine his eyes and give us the good or bad news on our next steps. Thankfully it turned out that while both his eyes looked affected, we could save one of them! The exam showed that he had likely been beaten around his face and his eyes damaged at that time, one of them beyond repair and the other scarred. We were delighted, however, that we could now save him.
Things suddenly got much better for little Theo from that moment on as we organised an enucleation of his ruptured and painful eye ASAP. Once that eye was out and he was fully recovered he was like a brand-new pony! He now stirs up all the other ponies to play games and wrestle with him out in the herd. He’s SO confident amongst the others and is seriously the cutest little pirate pony ever.
Theo has had very limited handling and of course been roughly handled in the past so he can get a little fidgety when being worked with. However, we are working hard to now show him the kind side of humans and he’s learning so quickly! He has learned to halter and lead well; he’s working on his tying up skills and with some patience and positive reinforcement we can trim his little hooves.
Theo has never foundered or had laminitis in our care which is HUGE for such a tiny guy! This does not mean he is safe to be paddocked in knee high green grass, but its pretty awesome to finally have a mini who has not suffered terrible hoof pain. With regular walkies (and/or plenty of exercise with other horses) and a balanced diet Theo will be happy.
Preference will be given to applicants who live within NSW to minimise travel time for this little guy, transport can also be arranged through Elysian Fields Sanctuary if required.
If you think you can offer Theo the perfect forever home, please complete an application, we would love to hear from you!
Please note: Some people have experienced an error with the form not being sent when clicking “submit” if this happens to you please email me at kate@elysianfieldssanctuary.com.au so I can double check it has been received.

Adoption details
After rehabilitation a profile is created of the animal to help find them the perfect match. Applicants can apply via my website using the application form. A house inspection (can be virtual) is required and then a visit can be arranged. If all goes well a two week trial in their new home begins, after completion of the two weeks the adoption will be finalised.
