Scout

Our gorgeous 5 month old Red Heeler Scout is seeking his forever home. Weighing in at 12 kilos, Scout is most probably going to grow into a typical Heeler size at full growth

He is an active puppy who is absolutely bursting with love! He loves to run around the house with his foster sister where they wrestle, chase and play with toys.

Scout was picked up from a rural pound so he has spent his time in foster care adapting to life in suburbia. He has learnt to walk on a lead and loves to stop and sniff all the interesting smells in the neighbourhood.

Scout absolutely loves people and makes friends wherever he goes. He loves to spend evenings cuddled up on the couch with his foster mum. He eagerly jumps up and gives lots of kisses.

FAVOURITE THINGS

Scout loves to play with toys. His favourite is a squeaky ball that he loves to play fetch with, and bigger toys that he can play keep away or tug of war with his foster sister. He loves to take naps in his bed during the day or on the couch with his foster mum in the evening.

INTERACTION WITH HUMANS

Scout loves people and will make friends with everyone he meets. Sometimes even climbing up into their lap if they crouch down to give him attention. He loves both men and women, and has seen children but not gotten up close to them. He gets very excited, still is puppy nipping/mouthing, and is quite a big boy already at 5 months. Therefore we would recommend his future home have children 12 years or older who are dog savvy.

OBEDIENCE/TRAINING

Scout is a very clever boy! He knows how to sit, fetch and will come when his name is called. He is pretty good with no, and is still learning down and spin and will pick them up (and any other tricks) with more practice.

He has been learning to walk on leash with a harness, and now walks at a decent pace and doesn’t pull much. He gets quite excited when he sees other dogs or is ina new environment so we are working on keeping his focus on his owner and staying relaxed.

He travels well in the car, he’s doesn’t cry or get travel sickness.

ANIMAL SOCIAL SKILLS

Scout is best friends with his foster sister. He is very playful but can play pretty rough. He would love to have a playmate in his new home but they should be a medium to large female who would be happy to share their space with an exuberant puppy!

He loves to play with other dogs at the park, particularly other pups who match his size and energy level.

He hasn’t been exposed to any other animals while in foster care.

We do find that Scout gets overly excited seeking other dogs when walking on lead so will require some training in keeping focus and calmness when out and about seeing other dogs.

FOOD

Scout is fed twice a day and eats Ivory Coat kibble. He loves his food and will happily polish it off in one sitting.

We also use his kibble as treats. He can be a bit nippy when he takes a treat so watch your fingers!

INDEPENDENCE

Scout is very well behaved when left alone. He usually sleeps or plays with his foster sister. He hasn’t shown any signs of destruction or crying.

His foster mum mainly works from home so he has only been left for a few hours at a time, and one full day so far. If his new family was out more regularly he may need enrichment activities to keep his mind busy and/or a playmate.

HYGIENE

Scout has only had one bath while at his foster home and he tolerated it. He has a short smooth coat that does shed. He will only need an occasional brush and bath.

SLEEPING

Scout sleeps in his crate in his foster mums room at night. He needs encouragement to get in but once in will sleep soundly through the night.

He also takes regular naps throughout the day in his dog bed, or on the couch in the evenings which is very crucial in a puppy's development

EXERCISE

Scout loves to go out for a walk. At the moment he gets walked once a day for about 20-30 minutes. He is quite an active boy so when he gets older he may prefer a longer walk or maybe 2 walks a day. He has also started going to the dog park and loves to run a round and play with the other dogs there.

INSIDE THE HOME

Scout is well behaved inside his foster home. He hasn’t shown any signs of destruction. He will jump on the furniture to cuddle with his foster mum, and as he runs around playing with his fur sister.

His toilet training is improving. He doesn’t poop inside, but will do the occasional wee if he gets too distracted playing and forgets to go out. He usually uses the dog door to go out to the backyard, or his foster mum will prompt him to go out. His new family should be patient when he first arrives home to show him how to get outside to toilet and understand he may have some accidents.

IDEAL HOME

Scout would love to be a part of an active family with a big backyard, or with someone on acreage where he has room to run.

He is going to grow into a big boy, and is still quite a mouthy puppy, so there shouldn’t be any small children in the home. If there are kids they should be over 12 and be dog savvy.

His adopter will need to provide ongoing training to make sure Scout grows into a well behaved dog.
