About Chios
Chios is a sensitive little boy who needs a special someone who can understand him and build a trusting relationship with him.
Having come from the pound as a stray, Chios has an unknown history. He was underweight, had very overgrown nails and was quite anxious. His foster carer had to focus on foundation training based around basic handling and trust building in order to grow his confidence. This training will need to be continued by his new owner and you would also need to be willing to engage a trainer if required. More information will be discussed with appropriate applicants over the phone.
Once Chios became more comfortable in his foster home, his wonderful and fun personality began to shine. He is a very playful young boy who loves his soft toys which he runs around with and shakes. Tug of war would be one of his favourite games which he will play with you or another small doggy friend. He gets his big boy play growl on and loves to win the game. When playtime is over, Chios is a super cuddly and an affectionate dog in his own little way. He will choose to lie right alongside you or curl up in a ball in your lap but his first choice on the cooler nights is to be under the blanket with you! He happily goes up to say hello to people but can be overwhelmed by too many pats, more so from people outside his inner circle. His new owner will need to let people know when to stop patting him by reading his body language.
Chios is an extremely smart little dog who enjoys training activities. He knows sit, drop (lay down), touch, shake and lures after a treat well. Chios is food motivated but not pushy and will work for any treat on offer. He has built up to daily walks in his foster home and he thoroughly enjoys getting out and about. At first, he needs to have time in his new home to just decompress before being walked so his new home must have a secure yard for him to spend time in. He also loves to spend time in the yard ‘hunting’ – also known as chasing lizards and other bugs! Chios has learned to walk nicely on the lead but can be a little overstimulated by passing other dogs (sometimes cries). We will be looking for a home where he will be walked in quieter areas where he doesn’t have to pass a huge number of other dogs each walk. At night, he sleeps throughout the night in a crate in his foster carers bedroom and he is happy to have a sleep in in the mornings if you are.
During his time in care, Chios has met a range of different dogs and has been very social with most dogs. He is keen to meet new doggy friends and give them a good sniff. Chios is unsure how to play with the other dogs (except for tug of war) and he can be overwhelmed by dogs who try to play with him which will make him go on the defensive. He can also be scared of being stepped on by bigger dogs tearing around, so for these reasons he is best suited to socialisation with easy going and calmer dogs in a control setting (play dates with known dogs and not dog off lead environments). It would be ideal for his new home to have another small dog who can show him the ropes.
We are looking for an experienced and dedicated home for Chios where he will be an inside dog with access to a fully fenced yard (no units please). His new owner would strongly benefit from a history with dealing with small anxious dogs and will need to have a high-level ability to read dog body language. Chios will either need another appropriate dog (see above) in the home for companionship or someone that is home more often than not. He should also be in an adult only home with just one or two residents (he is not suitable to live full time with children due to his personality and training needs but has met some kids on walks and is friendly with them). Chios is currently living with a cat and is a bit scared of him so he is fine to live with a dog friendly cat who won’t overwhelm him. Pocket pets are not recommended unless they have their own secure areas. Chios needs the right home with an owner who has the experience to ensure that life goes at his pace and the skills to manage him in more difficult circumstances that may cause him to lash out (e.g. nail clipping, if he is in pain). In the right hands he can become a wonderful, funny and joyful little companion.
If you feel that you can give Chios the home that he needs, then please complete a Dog Adoption Enquiry Form on the Fetching Dogs website and please include details of your dog handling experience.
Medical notes
Chios had his teeth cleaned and a blood test while in our care which came back within normal ranges. He does have a luxating patella on his left hind leg so he would benefit from beginning on supplements such as Antinol Rapid or Rose Hip Vital to support his joint care. It is also important to ensure that Chios maintains a healthy weight and decent muscle mass to keep pressure off his joints – he is currently 4.3kg.

Don't see a breed attached to one of our dogs? That's because we don't breed label dogs of unknown genetic history. We can't guess at breeds but that's okay, because we can tell you about the dog's individual personality, character, and behaviour.
