About Portia
Hello everyone my name is Portia!
I am beautiful 3 year old German Shepherd X lovebug who came into the shelter due to an unfortunate incident with a car. After surgery and a couple of months of cage rest and foster care I am finally ready for my forever home. Here are a few of the things that make me happy and will help me comfortable with new people and environments as I can sometimes be a little shy and unsure
- Ongoing training (I am currently learning to sit and lie down when asked)
- Treats
- Music (all kinds)
- Car rides (I settle down super quick especially with the radio on)
- spending time with my people no matter what you are doing
I get along with most other dogs and would benefit from an older, calm, well trained companion. No pocket pets or birds would be best. I get too excited around cats and like to chase them so a home without cats is also recommended
I can get overexcited easily and sometimes forget how big I am and forget my manners, but continued training will help me focus on being calmer and being able to control my excitement
I do get nervous if there are too many loud noises around me, so on New Years Eve we can still party but it needs to be in the form of chicken treats and a reassuring calm space. When out walking I am still finding my way after my surgeries, I will need your encouragement with yummy treats and incase environment such as loud noises startle me. The staff also have many handouts and information to help you with this while we get to know each other.
You can definitely help me with my confidence around new people by making positive associations such as offering me treats in the meantime. Due to my shyness, I would prefer to go to a quiet, mature and consistent household with no kids under 16 years.
Its important you know that if we live together I will need indoor and outdoor access. I don't like to be left alone for too long. In my previous home I was with my owner almost all the time, and mainly lived indoors. This can be helped by installing a doggy door or allowing access inside when I am alone and lots of chewing and licking enrichment when you leave me.
Due to my previous injury I do have some lameness in my injured leg. My vets can talk to you about any special requirements I may have due to this. A house without lots of stairs for me to climb everyday would also be great
If you have a German Shepherd shaped hole in your life, please come meet me at the shelter and consider taking me home with you!
