PERSONALITY
Portobello is a sweet and sensitive young girl who, through no fault of her own, was surrendered to SODR. She’s a big smooch who loves nothing more than climbing up onto the couch and resting any body part she can spare onto you (head, paw, you name it!). She has the sweetest, gentlest nature but can still romp around the back yard and act like a silly puppy with her foster siblings! If you’re looking for a people oriented dog that will give you endless love and affection then Portobello is the dog for you!

INSIDE
Portobello is very well mannered inside. She doesn’t destroy things, race around the house, counter surf, bark excessively or any other of those nasties. She acts like her foster mum’s little shadow and will often follow from room to room – even if it’s just a trip to the bathroom! She has been trialed in a crate and was very unsure at first but now seems to not mind it. Some crate training would still be required however if her new family wished to use one.

OUTSIDE/TOILETING
Portobello’s previous home had 20 acres of land to run around on so she needs a home with a yard for her to stretch her legs and play! She doesn’t seem to be an escape artist but secure fencing is still a must. She is once again not destructive and does not dig however she does like to sit in garden beds and squash flowers! Since being with her foster family she has had no accidents inside and is able to hold it overnight with no problems.

INDEPENDENCE
Little miss Portobello is a very people oriented dog and enjoys being a part of whatever you’re doing. She is also very physically affectionate and has no problems pawing at you/ head bumping you when she wants pats! She has been tested outside alone for 1-2 hours and seems to be fine (with minimal sooking upon her foster mum leaving) and has no problems being left outside with her foster siblings for a full work day. She would suit a home where someone is home most of the day or where she has a friend to spend time with while the humans are at work/school.

DOGS/ANIMALS/CHILDREN SOCIALISATION
Portobello LOVES other dogs! Her favourite thing to do is have a big romp around the yard with her foster brother and sister. She can be quite boisterous when playing so it would be best if she went to a home with a large, playful dog that is patient and happy to roughhouse. She was a little nervous when meeting her foster siblings and could be a little snappy with them in the beginning (particularly when the roughhousing got a bit TOO much) so slow, supervised introductions over the first few weeks are essential.

Portobello lives in harmony with two of her foster parent’s resident cats. She was a little fearful of them at first but now follows them around the house trying to clean their ears. She has not shown any sort of cat aggression/prey drive since being in foster care however; it is always advised to supervise dogs around cats in the home just in case!

Portobello has not had experience with children in her foster home but came from a home with children and apparently did well with them. She has met children/babies while out on walks and doesn’t seem too worried by them. She may be suited to a home with older, dog-savvy kids just because of her size.

FOOD
Portobello is a very food oriented gal and enjoys her two meals a day with some treats in between. She is the kind of dog that will eat anything in front of her without complaint. She will happily share kibble/treats/kongs/bones with her foster humans and dogs but has shown some food aggression towards very high value food (tinned fish mixed with her kibble). Because of this, and her tendency to be a bit of a piggy and try to push dogs off their food, it would be best if she was separated from other pets while eating.

VISITORS
Portobello is happy enough to have visitors in the home but is slightly fearful towards men. When her foster parents had a male visitor to the house she barked and hid for a few minutes before gradually coming out for pats. With female guests she walks straight up with no barking to say hello. She is not aggressive towards males though and is comfortable around her foster dad. As such, her foster mum thinks she would be suitable in a home with a male figure - but perhaps a quieter home where loud noises/ parties/ etc are limited.

ENRICHMENT/OBEDIENCE
Portobello has enjoyed a variety of enrichment activities with her foster family including treat puzzles, kongs and searching for treats her foster mum throws out onto the lawn (like a big snuffle mat!). Being part Border Collie she is a smart girl who should have access to these activities in her new home to keep her mind nice and active. Portobello knows ‘sit’ and ‘paw’ but could benefit from some more basic training. She is eager to please and very food motivated so should be quite easy to train.

BEHAVIOURS

Portobello is overall a very well behaved girl however there are a few small things she is working on. Portobello can be a little jumpy, particularly upon her foster parents coming home from work. She can also become quite persistent when wanting pats – clawing at you if she doesn’t get her way. She sometimes barks at the front window when people/dogs walk past but is easily redirect able. Also, as mentioned, she has been found to resource guard very high value food and can be a little snappy with boisterous dogs she isn’t overly familiar with.

GROOMING
Portobello has a short and easy to maintain coat that sheds a medium amount. She is not super excited at the prospect of baths however she will tolerate it with lots of pats and encouragement! She has nice pearly white teeth and enjoys a daily dental chew to keep them that way!

WALKS
Portobello doesn’t seem to have much experience walking on a lead but she has been working really hard on getting better at this! She has been especially receptive to walking with a halti and is much more manageable when wearing one! She is very well behaved when passing other dogs and people and is good around traffic and noisy spaces. 1 hour + of exercise per day is a must.

SLEEP

Portobello slept in a crate for her first few nights in foster care and then transitioned into her foster parent’s bedroom. She would be suited to either situation in her new home (some crate training still needed) but would likely prefer being in the bedroom with her family! She is happy sleeping on her bed at the foot of the human’s bed and is not disruptive at all during the night.

CAR

Portobello can be a little nervous in the car, often becoming shaky and putting her tail between her legs. She is, however; quite happy to jump into the car and her foster mum thinks she’ll improve with more exposure to car rides and trips to fun places!
