About Biggie
This gentle giant is a true gentleman, his beautiful nature captured the hearts of our volunteers instantly, he's one of those truely special cats that just draw you in and melt your heart.
We are looking for someone special to give Biggie a home, this older boy is looking for a companion willing to dote on him, shower him with affection, and give him a warm loving home to spend his twilight years. In return, Biggie will thank you daily for the comfy lounge with affection, compliment you on your cooking (or can opening abilities), and put a smile on your face every time you walk into the room. It's a pretty good deal we think!
Biggie was doing it tough, living on the streets with a small family of cats. Our group was originally contacted by their feeder asking for help with kittens, the kittens were brought into care, had their vaccinations, health checks and were desexed, before finding homes of their own. Our volunteer then worked with the feeder and began desexing the adults to stop this little family turning into a larger colony.
The feeder noticed this poor fella had a really big wound on the side of his face, which needed urgent vet care. Biggie had what was most likely an abscess, on the side of his face, which was incredibly painful, and not healing well, as it needed a good clean and a big dose of antibiotics.
Our volunteer was onto it immediately and had Biggie contained in no time, so off they went to the vet for a checkup, a good clean of his wound, some much needed antibiotics, and of course, a quick snip snip to get him desexed while we had him. Biggie needed to keep his wound clean while it healed, so off he went, home with our volunteer for a week or two to heal.
There is a saying in rescue "never trap without a plan", and Biggie's plan was simple; Get him off to the vet for treatment, then a week or two in care with our volunteer to recuperate, and when his face was on the mend, he'd be reunited with his family where his feeder would continue to care for him on the streets.
Biggie had other plans! Biggie decided that he would be the one to win over the heart of a seasoned trapper, a volunteer who has trapped countless cats, all of whom have returned to their colony after desexing and a week recovering, and Biggie was working his plan to perfection, throwing our unsuspecting volunteers plan right out the window!
It turns out this old beaten up tom cat, who came to us with a face that only a mother could love, has played his hand well. Biggie has been an incredibly well behaved house guest, he has been using his litter box, sweet talking our volunteer, and has the most lovely manners. It turns out he is quite the sweetheart, this big old boofhead is actually a real gentleman.
Biggie is making the most of his own room, he loves to lay on the lounge, laze in sunny spots, and greet his new friend each day as she gets up for work, or comes home at the end of the day. Over the past 6 weeks, he has slipped into home life seamlessly.
Our volunteer has a quieter home, and Biggie is thriving there, but there are many little visitors who come by regularly, and Biggie is so sweet with them all, always welcoming the kids into his home (oops, did I say his home). Biggie comes for pats, he's learning quickly the click of your fingers means 'come here' for pats or food, and often comes running, happy to take either. Biggie really enjoys following his carer around, and sits with her on the lounge enjoying a nice pat; with some time and patience this boy could easily become quite the lap cat, he is well on the way already!
Biggie is a great eater, he LOVES dinnertime, he's not fussy at all! Much to the carers delight, he is cleaning out her freezer, making his way through all the food her own cats and our colony cats have turned their nose up at; he's a handy boy to have around.
We don't know if Biggie was once a pet who was lost, dumped or abandoned, or if he is just a street cat born and bred, who has decided that home life is the life for him; like so many others, his past will remain a mystery, but this beautiful soul deserves to live out his twilight years in the lap of luxury.
Biggie has been in care for 6 weeks now, he has been on his own during this time (for his own safety, the carers own cat is a total thug!) so we are not entirely sure how he will go with other cats, he was living on the streets with other cats though. The carer does not have dogs, but does have dogs who visit, the dogs are quite boisterous and make quite a bit of commotion at the door, so Biggie has been wary of them on the few occasions they visited, so dogs would need to be introduced slowly. Biggie has been very calm and affectionate with the children who visit, enjoying their attention, and showing them a lot of interest. Given he is an older boy, he may be better suited to an adult household, or family with slightly older children, though.
Biggie had his health check and being an older boy who has lived a hard knock life, there were no real surprises. Biggie is FIV positive, it's not unusual in cats who are allowed outdoors. Some of Biggie's teeth weren't in great shape, so his canine teeth were removed, making him more comfortable and to prevent further problems. Biggie's face is healing well, but being such a big wound that he had, the scaring means his hair is a little sparse and will probably remain that way, it just adds to his charm though. Biggie has had some flu like symptoms, and has a slightly irritated eye, which could possibly have been related to his original wound, however, his carer thinks he may have accidentally done it himself while cleaning, it is improving, and she is keeping an eye on it's progress to report back to vet.
Biggie has also been vaccinated, flea and worm treated, and is desexed. It sounds like a scary list, but much of it is just part of being an older cat, even the cute kittens end up there eventually.
We are looking for a very special person to take on this old fella and give him a wonderful retirement. We know finding homes for adult cats can be difficult, particularly beaten up old tom cats, many people looking to adopt will scroll past Biggie's photos at lightning speed, and that's ok, we only need one suitable family to fall in love with Biggie, one family who appreciate that older cats are far less energetic than kittens, and are looking for a companion cat, not a tiny tornado.
Biggie's carer is happy to chat with anyone who would like to consider giving him a home, that may have questions or concerns. Our goal is not just to find someone to take Biggie home, we are looking for a person, or family who will get as much from Biggie as they give him, because this sweet old gentleman really does have so much to offer.
Biggie's FIV isn't holding him back, so we hope it doesn't hold you back either. If you'd like to get to know Biggie a little more, please send us a message and we will be in touch with you soon.
