About Ace
Ace is a lovely 16 month old black/brindle desexed male Labrador. He has grown up around children and likes to make friends with other dogs. Ace likes to have a chat and is engaging with the family. He is affectionate, loves a cuddle and enjoys being around his people. He is good with grooming.
Ace is very intelligent and has learnt a few different ways to get attention. He can be a bit cheeky and steal items for attention. He has higher energy levels at times so would need an active family who enjoy taking him on daily walks. He enjoys learning tasks and skills and we would expect his new family to keep up his training as it is very important to keep him physically and mentally stimulated. He also has a history of being a bit mouthy but this does improve after he settles into his new environment.
Ace likes to scan the ground and pick up things he likes or sniff to take it all in. He walks very well in a head collar and this has helped improve his comfort, confidence and focus when out and about. He does display some self-interest and will try to stop if he doesn’t want to do the things his handler is doing or go in the same direction as them. He will continue on if you wait him out patiently.
All of the dogs involved in the ADA training program are accustomed to spending most of their time with humans so he would need to go to a home where there are people at home most of the time. If going to a home with another dog he will need to meet them before a trial stay at your home as Ace has high play drive which will need to be managed. He can forget to listen to his people but that will settle down with time and maturity.
If you would like to apply to adopt Ace, please email mwatson@assistancedogs.org.au for an application form. The applicant will be required to have a meet and greet with Ace’s trainer before a two week trial at the applicants home.
