Knight

Small and cuddly Knight is a 9 week old Whippet X weighing in at only 5 kilos. An outgoing and loving puppy, he enjoys playing with toys and other dogs, and cuddling up to his foster mum. He has a gorgeous smooth black coat that will be very low maintenance.

Knights Mummy and Daddy also came into the rescue and both are just small weighing in at just over 10 kilos they are both whippet x but we are unsure of the x ( both pictured in his profile pics gallery so based on mum and dad we feel Knight will only grow into a small to med boy

TRAVEL IN THE CAR

Knight has been in the car a couple of times and has travelled very well with no crying. He should be properly restrained for his safety.

FOOD

Knight eats 3 times a day. He eats Royal Canin medium puppy food and will eat at his own pace.

We have just been using his dry food as treats.

INSIDE

Knight has spent most of his time inside due to the cooler weather. As a puppy he likes to get into things he shouldn’t so his new home should be puppy proofed to make sure there are no shoes/cords/etc in his reach.

OUTSIDE/TOILET TRAINING

Knight has just begun his toilet training and is still learning so he will need ongoing help in his new home. At the moment, he gets taken outside after he wakes up, after he eats, before bed, and every hour or two in between. When he goes outside he loves to have a little wander and investigation of the yard before getting down to business. He still has some accidents inside if you forget to take him out so patience is needed.

He has taught himself to use the doggy door to go back inside when he is finished. He doesn’t understand how to take himself outside via the dog door yet and relies on his foster mum to take him out regularly.

When he grows up he could spend more time being left outside so a small to medium size yard with secure fencing and shelter is required.

VISITORS AND PEOPLE

Knight enjoys spending time with people. He likes pats and cuddles from visitors to the home but doesn’t get over excited when they first arrive. He spends his evening cuddled up with his foster mum on the couch. He hasn’t been exposed to children yet but I think he would enjoy having them to play with.

GROOMING

Whippets are a very low maintenance breed. Knight has a very short smooth coat. He will need his eyes and ears cleaned every now and then to prevent infection. A bath every month or two will also be enough.

ENRICHMENT/OBEDIENCE

Knight loves to play with toys. He will chase a ball if you throw it and is starting to learn to bring it back. We have started to teach him sit. He should be given ongoing obedience training so he grows up into a good boy!

WALKS

Knight hasn’t been on any walks yet due to his vaccination status.

He will only need short walks as a puppy.

After he matures 1-2 walks a day would be recommended.

INDEPENDENCE

Knight is more of a people lover than his brother and prefers to be in the company of his humans or playing with the other dogs.

His foster mum works from home so he hasn’t been left home very often, and when he has it’s only been for a few hours at a time. When left with the other dogs he will play and nap as usual. He’s been left completely alone twice for a couple of hours and wandered around the house and chilled in his bed.

SOCIALISATION

Knight has been in foster care with his littermate/brother Kodiak and foster sister 1.5 year old cavoodle. The three of them love to play, wrestle, and chase around the house. Knight is more playful than Kodiak and loves to play with the other dogs, and will continue to play with the resident dog after his brother has tired out.

He hasn’t met any other dogs due to vaccination status.

I think he would be happiest in a home with a young-ish small-medium size female who would be happy to share their home with a playful puppy. Only dog homes will also be considered if the family will be around a lot.

He hasn’t met any cats or other animals, and we would not recommend his new home have cats or pocket pets as whippets have a high impulse to chase and catch so it would be unsuitable.

SLEEP

Knight sleeps in his own crate (separate from his brother) and doesn’t wake up during the night. The crate is located in his foster mum's bedroom and needs to be guided there after his pre-bed toilet time. He loves to come for a cuddle in his foster mums bed in the morning.

During the day he sleeps in a dog bed in the living area, either alone or cuddled up with the other dogs. He is not currently crated during the day.

In the evenings he loves to cuddle up on the couch with his foster mum.

As a puppy Knight needs regular naps throughout the day, so will need quiet time away from kids and other active dogs.

IDEAL HOME

-A small to medium sized yard with shelter and secure fencing

-An individual/couple/family of any age as long as any kids that will be around the dog can respect his boundaries and understand puppies will play bite and that they need to be allowed to rest between play undisturbed

-You will need to be relatively active as he will need at least 1 (or 2) walks a day when he grows up (only short walks while he is a puppy)

-Ongoing training and socialisation, and someone to take him to puppy school

-Preferably a playmate in the home, being a small to medium female, that is well AND recently socialised, and of a temperament that will tolerate having a puppy around. Socialsed means that your current dog is able to play with other dogs they do not know

-Only dog homes will also be considered if his family and not gone for extended hours of the day

-His new family must understand that puppies take time to settle and will sometimes cry, chew, and bite.

-He should be allowed to sleep inside especially while he is still little
