About Isak
Isak… with the baby blues ❄️
Isak came to us as a 1yo young pup and has been in care for just over two months. He is a beautiful 14.5mo Great Dane x Bull Arab and is deaf.
Isaks baby blue eyes capture everyone’s attention!! But if you look closely you will also notice his iris is not circular in shape. This is a congenital condition called ‘Coloboma’ where the Iris has a ‘key hole’ shape to it. Although this condition has minimal effect normally on vision, the combination of it and pale blue eyes means that Isak may have sensitivity to bright lights and sunshine. To counteract any light sensitivity he may have, Isak will soon be receiving his very own Rexspec (doggie goggles) so that he can enjoy all the adventures his family takes him on during the day.
Isak came into care with the bare minimum of training in all areas but has shown to be super smart and super motivated to learn new things. His basic commands are progressing and now knows Sit, Drop (almost), Wait, Stay and Come. He is also learning a new trick- shake! One of many he is very capable of learning!
Isak is learning to walk well on a front attached harness and/or face halti and with minimal distractions, he walks beautifully. He is still young so can be easily distracted so pulling can be an issue, however, he is very food motivated, and treats will help bring the focus back to you. He will need ongoing training in this area as he is already a big strong dog.
He would greatly benefit from group training weekly or even some one-on-one training. He’d love to try agility too! Isak is super smart with no separation anxiety. He is crate trained and house trained; he can tell you when he needs to go out! With time and patience, we absolutely believe he will be the most wonderfully well-trained boy.
Isak is very social and loves to play with dogs, he does however, need help to learn reading doggy cues and body language more when playing/greeting. His foster carer has already seen a lot of improvement already. His carers have helped him gain this skill just by stepping in when they see the change in his and other dogs body language.
Isak loves people, but his history with men means that he can be a bit shy and cautious with men he doesn’t know at first; but when given time and space he will soon warm up to them. His new family will need to be his advocate and ensure he is never pushed into a social situation with men until he seems happy and comfortable so learning to read Isak’s doggy cues will be important.
Isak would benefit greatly to live with a calm, friendly and well-trained dog of a similar size and energy , who is happy to play but also capable of letting him know when enough is enough and teach him some manners. A dominant or anxious dog would not suit Isak at all.
Isak currently lives with multiple (3) cats and is absolutely fine with them. They do have their own space (as all animals in the house must) but he is such a friendly boy! He also lives with chickens currently, he has shown some interest through fencing but isn't so excited by them anymore but it is always wise to supervise interactions anyway whether the dog is deaf or hearing.
Isak is a high-energy dog and will be for the next few years. He will require a suitable amount of physical and mental stimulation. Mental enrichment each day to keep his mind busy and active and help tire him out!. He loves soft toys, toys of all descriptions, and has used a licki mat, Kong or any indestructible chew toys. Puzzle toys are a novelty and using a ‘go slow’ bowl or scatter feeding works well also. He’d just be as happy with multiple cardboard boxes with treats and toys hidden inside for him to find whilst you are out for short periods. Isak’s preference would be to have someone home more often than not. He really does love having people around throughout the day, so investing in a dog walker if you are out for most of the day will keep this boy happy.
Isak LOVES to be wherever you are! He loves to be inside or outside with you. He is a very affectionate cuddly boy, although can put himself away in his crate (door open) when he wishes to. His crate is his quiet, calm, and safe space so make sure you can fit an XL-size crate in your living room. He is definitely a socially outgoing dog - a VERY active boy who needs a lot of stimulation, enrichment and ongoing training and boundaries. He’s had such an amazing start with his foster carer but it’s now time for his forever parents to take over the training reins.
Last word from his foster carer…
“Isak is just a very cheeky teenager who likes to keep you on your toes. Isak LOVES sticks, carries them on walks, brings them home, steals them off trees - you name it, he loves a stick! Isak loves to rearrange house items/clothing, shoes & socks are the fave to walk around with, so be careful where you put things down or he’ll try to ‘help’ with the washing.
He absolutely LOVES any and all toys and must be spoilt with them in his new home as that’s what he deserves after an up-and-down start to life. Isak is FULL of energy and a still-growing boy. This means he needs a loving home who will be committed to giving ALL that he needs and deserves to show his full potential and flourish. Treating him like a much loved family member; spending lots of time inside, many adventures and just involving him in everyday life in and out of the house would be awesome… AND you’ll need to be totally okay with no personal space - yes! That includes a Great Dane big butt sitting on you at times”
Isak traveled a fair distance to get to his current foster carers so it’s our preference he is adopted locally in South Australia or even Victoria. A meet and greet will be necessary if there is a male person in the house also.
