About Playful Eddie
Eddie is a beautiful 3-year-old Staffy/Rhodesian Ridgeback cross. When his family picked him up from his foster family as a 10-week-old rescue pup he was first described to them as ‘the mohawk puppy’ for the beautiful strong ridge that runs all along his back.
Eddie is a loving, intelligent and playful boy, who is full of character. He makes his owners laugh on a daily basis with his silly chats and sounds, likes to give big slobbers and absolutely adores people and attention – wagging his tail to ask for pats with full body bum wiggles! He feels most at home snuggled up on the couch with the family, or playing fetch at the park. Once settled in his new home, Eddie will be a great combination of cuddly and independent.
True to his breed mix Eddie is affectionate and strong-willed, but he's also very sensitive and hasn't had the best start in life. He struggles with generalised anxiety and control issues. Lots of love and clear yet positive guidance and boundaries to help him feel safe and secure. Eddie will thrive in a predictable, calm home without kids, that ideally has experience with rescue dogs and behaviour training. He will need some time and support to settle in and it is important his new family understands this.
Eddie is very well-loved by his current family and they are heartbroken to find him a new home, but they are looking for a new family as Eddie is struggling to settle around three kids. His temperament is best suited to a quiet home without children where he gets all the calm, routine, and attention he deserves. He will do well in a loving and gentle home with clear structure, and will give endless cuddles and playtime in return.
Training is a great way to build a strong and trusting relationship with Eddie and we strongly recommend his new family continue this, especially as he's still a young dog. He is very food and toy (mainly ball) motivated and loves to learn, which makes him quite responsive to commands and training. He has been to puppy school, has done basic and advanced obedience training, and also did some agility training. He has mastered the basics and knows a range of commands. He will sit, lie down, touch, side, look, give paw, recall and much more.
He is also lead trained but tends to pull when in groups or with new people, so his family will need to continue to work on his loose-lead walking skills in those situations. Eddie can be left home alone and inside without touching a thing and has never shown signs of separation anxiety.
Eddie will need a home with a yard to run and sniff, and whilst he'd be fine in a house (no apartments) with garden in the city where he currently lives, a calmer environment might be even better. Eddie loves running in the outdoors, and although he has so far always been an inside dog and wants to be a part of everyday family life, a space outdoors and access to the garden to laze into the sunshine will be important for him.
Apart from when he was a puppy Eddie has never lived in a house with other dogs and so this is untested. Whilst Eddie generally doesn’t chase or react to cats in the streets, he does chase them from the roof and out of the yard, so we don’t think a cat household will be suitable.
Eddie is desexed, microchipped and is up to date on flea/tick/worming. His current owners are located in Five Dock, Sydney and are willing to travel within reason to meet with possible new families to guarantee that Eddie goes to the very best home that suits him well.
