Hi people I'm Ted or as my foster mum affectionately calls me ‘Little Ted ‘
I have been in foster care for a number of months as I have had a crook gut and thankfully AK9 have taken excellent care of me by trying every brand of dog food, gourmet crocodile, probiotics ect and now Purina Gastrointestinal which is meant to be the bees' knees for hounds with my condition. Unfortunately, I have seen a specialist and my condition is most probably chronic and it's something I am going to have to live with. I have been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis which means I get bad tummy cramps and runny poop, sometimes blood but the good thing is it can be managed with a strict diet and medicatio
What a sweetheart this boy is, and even with his bowel issues, he takes it all in his stride and is a happy go lucky chap. Ted, being a Kelpie cross has exceptionally fine features, a slim muzzle with a cute little white streak down his forehead and nose. He has pokey little bat ears that sit horizontal when he concentrates intensely on his ball.
When you meet this little guy the first thing he will do is bring you a ball or toy to throw. Ted absolutely loves chasing things especially balls. He will bring it to you, flick his head and throw it to you. You cannot resist as he looks at you with such eagerness hoping that you will engage in play with him.
Ted loves to talk, in a busy household he likes to have his say, not a bark but more of what I would call doggy chatter. This is what makes Ted quirky and unique. Hes a funny little A type personality. Intense , busy, focused, determined.
Ted is a boy that is an aloof dude. He likes to do his own thing and is very content with his own company in the backyard pottering around looking for insects, chasing flies, bits of fluff or rolling around a soccer ball in the backyard. As long as Ted has space and toys, he is a happy boy. He does not need the company of other dogs and rarely engages in play with others, but if he sees a human, BANG! he is there with a tail wag and toy!
Travel in car
Ted happily jumps in the car and travels well.
Outside
Ted is happy outside. He will happily potter around the backyard looking for things to chase, butterflies, bits of fluff, a soccer ball, basically anything that moves. Ted would like a bit of space to do this so a medium to large yard would be ideal. Ted enjoys his people being outside so they can throw the ball for him as this is really his favorite pastime. Ted likes to use a kennel or a deck chair to snooze. Ted is not a destructive boy, he will occasionally rip open a soft toy but has not been seen to destroy anything else around the house
Visitors and people
Ted welcomes all visitors with a happy little tail wag, and he will instantly grab a toy, throw it to you with a flick of his head and then stare at you eagerly, if you don’t respond he will pick it up and throw it closer. Down at the park he will take his ball to anyone who looks like they may be a stronger ball thrower than his mum, kids, grannies, grandpas, mums and dads. He thinks all humans have the same enjoyment that he does. At times when inside we have to say “No Ted “as he will keep bringing you the ball. He will then resign himself to sit back on his mat. Ted is not an overly affectionate boy, he would like to be in the same room as you but is not a lap dog. There are times Ted will come for a cuddle and tummy rub but generally, in the evening.
Independence
Ted is very independent. He is content anywhere and with anyone. He rarely plays with other dogs, he has befriended one of the resident dogs, they will lie there mouthing and soft wrestling, he is not your zoomie kind of dude.
Ted can be a little chatter box and can become obsessed by things, currently he is obsessed with one of the resident dogs which pays him little attention, he will follow her round, stare, chatter and try to engage her. I guess that’s all part of his working dog traits as Ted always likes to be doing something. An active family is ideal for Ted to keep him stimulated.
Walks
Ted walks well on the lead and is a great little running buddy, but we don’t run him far because of his weight and gut issues so 5 km max. Most of the time Ted and his buddies are taken in the car to the park as there are two other dogs in residence. At the park as soon as he jumps out of the car, he is looking for you to throw the ball. He will do that for his whole walk, back and forth he will bring the ball so its always a good idea to take two in case one gets lost, but Ted does have an amazing sense of smell and will usually eventually find a lost ball. If you do a lead walk, he will happily sniff the daily news. Ted will jump in the back of the car when you are ready to head home but he won't come near you when off lead so if you leave from home he will need to remain on the lead, he doesn’t run off its more he is a cheeky boy not wanting his game to end
Obedience
Ted knows how to sit and wait, he is learning no, outside and mat. He is an intelligent boy but also a bit stubborn. As above his recall is selective but he never runs off just close enough so you can't catch him.
Ted does have some on lead reactivity with dogs and may bark and pull towards them but is moved on fairly easily, Ted is not aggressive more nippy and annoying to some unknown dogs so introductions need to be done with caution. This is most probably related to his true kelpie personality than being nasty. Once he gets to know other dogs he is tolerant of them. If there is a ball involved he does not give a side ways glance to other dogs.
Inside
Ted has had to learn his inside manners. Initially Ted was unfamiliar with walking on floorboards and carpet. Ted is fully toilet trained but he must always have access to the outside. He currently resides in a home with a doggy door and now his diarrhea has resolved he does not have accidents inside.
Sleep
Ted will sleep anywhere you put him. He was initially an outdoor dog but since being in foster care has learnt the comforts of being an inside dog. He will sneak onto your bed if you let him as that’s where he prefers. He will roll himself into a small ball and not move all night. He will also sleep outside in a kennel and is very quiet all night outdoors so he is very easily pleased inside or out.
Toilet Training
Ted does have chronic diarrhea, which has now been resolved with the introduction of psyllium husks into his diet twice a day. He is fully toilet trained and will take him outside when needed.
Teds ideal home
An active home that will walk Ted or throw the ball for at least half an hour a day
No cats or small animals as Ted will most probably annoy them
A home that will allow Ted inside
A family that is prepared to take on Ted with his medical issues
Ted would benefit from some group obedience training to keep his mind active and stimulated
Ted is not suited to dog parks because of his nipping but ovals are ok with other dogs as long as there is someone throwing his ball
Ted is good around all children but we think more suitable to live with children over 10.
Medical notes
Food
TED HAS COLITIS
Ted has been on multiple foods for his gut issues and has seen a specialist who had diagnosed him with Ulcerative Colitis which can be managed with a strict diet and medication regimen. Ted needs to be fed specific food. Ted can have pumpkin added to his meal once a day to help with bulking up his stool, but we have found psyllium husks twice a day works best. Unfortunately, Ted cannot have any treats as it may upset his gut and cause bleeding. Ted has gained and maintained his weight, which was our goal as this is a condition he may have for life. Obviously, potential adoptees need to take the cost of his food into account but it's no more expensive than other high-quality foods. The joy and happiness Ted will bring a family far out weights the cost of this loveable dude
