About Oden
PLEASE NOTE THAT UNFORTUNATELY WE ARE UNABLE TO FLY OUR ANIMALS EITHER WITHIN WA OR INTERSTATE
**Before applying, please remember that adopting a puppy into your home is a huge commitment, and very demanding of your time. Puppies require daily exercise and play, considered and gradual positive socialisation with other people/dogs/puppies, grooming and training. When applying, please consider your work hours, holidays, and how busy your personal life is. Puppies will need someone who is home for most of the day with regular focused input, especially in those first six months after adoption **
NAME: Oden
BEFORE SAFE ESPERANCE: Came to SAFE Esperance as an owner surrender with his 4 siblings.
BREED: Rhodesian Ridgeback x Blue Heeler x Kelpie - Oden could be a medium or above medium dog and has a lovely ridge.
Breed characteristics: Rhodesian Ridgeback - smart but stubborn with a dignified aloofness to strangers, Affectionate and gentle with family and will defend their home if necessary. Mischievous and strong willed so would need an experienced owner. They are sensitive and do not do well when left alone for long periods. Their high prey drive precludes other animals unless raised together. If bored and lonely can be destructive or wander so strong, high fencing is needed. Not a dog for novice owners.
Blue Heeler (Australian Cattle Dog): Affectionate, devoted and protective of family but can be wary of strangers. Usually attaches to one person and loves to be close. Very, very high energy and highly intelligent - they love to have a job and if not mentally and physically worked enough they will be destructive. Bred to herd by nipping so is mouthy and can nip anything that moves. They have a strong prey drive with other small animals unless reared with them. Not for novice owners
Kelpie: high energy and highly intelligent being a working breed, so may need to be found a 'job' to make them feel fulfilled. They get bored easily if their brains are not worked, so training is a must. They are very social with adults and children and social with other dogs. They are very loyal but if the instinct is strong they may try to herd your children.
****************************************************************************************************************
ASSETS: Friendly, confident, easy going, affectionate, laidback, sweet and playful. He's a very friendly boy with a ton of love to give!
ENERGY LEVEL: Oden is a typical pup at the moment, plays, eats, poops and sleeps! As he grows he will need good daily exercise and activities to keep his mind and body active. With two working dog breeds in his genes he will probably be a medium to high energy boy so be prepared to increase his daily activities and training as he develops.
FAVOURITE THINGS: He loves to play fetch with his ball and has soft toys that he likes to wrestle with and chew. He also enjoys playing with his brother and sister in his foster home and has little bursts of energy then will settle down for a snooze and cuddle time with his person.
ENDEARING FEATURES: Oden is very sweet, loving and playful. He loves affection from his people and will lap up all the attention he can get.
WORKING ON: Housetraining. It's starting to come together but he will need some gentle training and persistent gentle signals to remind him to go outside. Expect some accidents until he gets the hang of things! He will also need some lead training. He knows a few commands already and picks things up fairly easily, so time, gentle persistence and repetition will reap rewards.
ODEN'S IDEAL HOME:
* a home where he is treated as part of the family and is allowed to be inside and out as he needs
* a decent sized garden where he can run and play, sniff and explore
* a dog- experienced family where someone is home for most of the day especially in the first six months after adoption
* attendance at puppy school and continued training into adulthood for him to learn and grow confidence
* considered and consistent positive exposure and socialisation
Oden could live with another dog in his new home after gentle introduction. He hasn't been introduced to any small animals as yet but could possibly live with a dog-savvy cat after supervised introduction. He would suit a home with gentle older children only, 8+ who will know how to read his signals when he needs space.
If Oden sounds like the perfect fit for your family, please submit an enquiry and we will be in touch soon.
