Our gorgeous boy Junior is ready to start looking for his perfect forever family. Junior came into care a few weeks back after he was taken to a local vet clinic to be put to sleep due to a severe eye injury. He was being fed as a "stray" for 2 years and unfortunately the feeders weren't in a position to seek medical attention. Instead of being put to sleep, the veterinary clinic contacted us to see if we could take him in and have the necessary veterinary treatments done. Junior became a Handicat and his painful eye was removed.
Junior is a gorgeous big boy who is settling into the indoor life like a dream. At first he wasn't sure about all of the luxuries he was provided, and instead of sleeping in a comfy bed he would sleep in his litter box. Now Junior's favourite place to sleep is a clean litter box lined with snuggly blankets 🤣. Junior used to live on the street and will need a few more months to understand that he actually does like all those little luxuries, he just needs time to learn what they are. Junior is a very good boy, he loves his dry food, a chin scratch, and to rub his newly removed eye on any surface he can find. All surfaces must smell like gorgeous Junior!
Due to spending his life on the street and getting into the odd tussle with another cat, Junior is a carrier of FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus). This is a virus he will have for the remainder of his life, however it doesn't mean he will be sick. The majority of FIV positive cats will go their entire life without getting sick from the virus itself. Junior does however need to remain as a strictly indoor only cat (like all of our adoptions), unless he has a secure and safe outdoor enclosed space to enjoy. He also needs a family who will keep his yearly vaccinations up to date, and also those of any other cats in the household. He is also needing a family who will take him straight to the vets for a check up if he is ever a little off (sniffle etc), as having the virus can sometimes make him more susceptible to catching the flu due to a lowered immune system.
FIV is VERY hard for cats to catch, and it isn't easily spread between them. An FIV positive cat has to cause a deep bite wound that enters the non infected cats blood stream. It is NOT transmitted through urine, faeces, grooming, sharing of food and water dishes etc. For this reason FIV positive cats CAN live with other cats, as long as they get along! The most important thing is that the FIV positive cat is cat friendly, and shows no signs of serious fighting.
Junior is available for adoption as an only cat, or to a home with another relaxed and friendly cat who is happy to share their space. Junior will be tested further with other cats before he is rehomed. We are looking for a home with older children only as he isn't used to being picked up and carried around, or being poked and prodded. He would be the perfect cat for a single person, or relaxed couple.
Please let us know if you would like to meet with Junior, or are able to offer him a foster home. 🐾
Adoption details
If you would like to know more information about any of our rescue animals, our rescue group, or to arrange a meet and greet, please email us. Please provide us with your name, email address, contact number, and some information about yourself, and the home you have to offer one of our rescue animals.
About us:
Gary and the Handicats Rescue is run soley by a Vet Nurse who works shift work and also cares for sick and high needs rescue animals. We strive to get back to you within 24 hours, but during busy kitten seasons there may be a delay. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
Please note we do not run on a "first in first served" basis. We screen applicants well before proceeding with adoption. Vet and rental references may be required for certain special needs adoptions.
We receive a large amount of interest in our handraised kittens, and certain special needs animals. Please understand that if you're application isn't successful, this may just be due to the amount of applications we have had for that particular animal, and not because of the home you have to offer. Preference is always given to our past adopters.
Meet and Greets:
• Meet and greets are held in an environment where the particular cat or kitten feels most comfortable.
• Please do not bring your own animals to a meet and greet.
• We do not allow any of our animals to be taken home on the day of the meet and greet. Special circumstances may be considered.
Picking up you're new family member:
• You MUST bring a safe, secure, and size appropriate carrier for your baby to travel home in. We do not have carriers to provide new adopters, and we will not send home one of our rescue animals in a cardboard box or a washing basket. If a carrier isn't able to be provided, your adoption will be cancelled.
