About Stella ~ 2yr Old Wolfhound X (On Trial 22/10/22)
Hey you there! Stella is on the search for her forever home but she’s a bit shy so she wants me, her foster carer to tell everyone all about what a totally awesome girl she is!
Stella is a 2-year-old Wolfhound x Cattle dog, she is on the small side for a hound, being under 40kg but what she lacks in stature she makes up for in personality! You need to understand that as a Wolfhound, Stelly has a particularly Wolfy style of play – and it’s not for every dog. Having said that she has totally won over my own two dogs who love playing zoomies and join in with her bouncing, spinning, handsy, bitey-face type of play. If you’ve not seen this type of play in action check out her videos and know she is having the best time! She is submissive to my dogs and will come and sit with an enormous smile on her face when “stop” is called on playtime. She is just the goodest girl!
Stelly as she is affectionately known, is houstrained and will sleep through the night, preferably in your presence such as beside your bed. She is not destructive inside the house and is trusted everyday with being left inside the house unsupervised while I go to work. Since arriving in foster care, Stella has absolutely blossomed and grown in confidence thanks to her foster brothers. She will try new foods and enjoys eating raw fresh meat varieties like chicken, kangaroo, and beef.
Stella has learned what a dog bed is for! She never had one before arriving into care. She now knows how to play with toys and enjoys carrying a toy around in her mouth, nibbling it, tossing it and then pouncing on it, she will also chase a ball or toy when thrown. Stella is a total goofball, curious and very driven by her nose when exploring the world, she wants to sniff any new dog very keenly all over at first!
Stella is friendly with dogs of all sizes and breeds but has told me she will choose a home where she has another friendly, male dog of similar size to play with her and give her
confidence to try new things. While we don’t know her full history, we know Stelly is quite skittish especially in unfamiliar environments and with unexpected movements and sounds. She doesn’t want to go to lots of different places until she’s quite bonded with you and feels safe and secure – and even then, she may not really enjoy it, at least at first.
Stella hasn’t been on many walks, she usually wants to stay close by your side and will take a little while to relax into the walk enough to walk ahead on the lead and let her nose enjoy all the new sniffs. She can be easily startled by traffic noise or unexpected sounds but is improving with the more regular sights and sounds of her routine walk.
Although Stella will require your patience while she learns to trust and eventually LOVE you, this process is greatly helped along by having another calm friendly dog around, giving her time and space …and lots of treats! Once she trusts you, she is so loyal, she looks at you with her big eyes like you are the most important person in the world – which you are to her! She is an absolute love bug! She loves a cuddle, being patted and brushed and being told just how pretty and what a good girl she is!
Due to her complete obliviousness to her size as well as the unpredictable nature of children, Stella would like to only go to a home with either no children or mature, calm, confident children over 12 years of age.
Stella made a list of her ideal furever home:
- an owner, couple or family who are committed to continuing her slow, gentle exposure to
the world as new things are a bit scary sometimes
- a home with not too much foot traffic and constant visitors as this is constantly unsettling
for her
- a large yard to expel all her zoomy energy as she will not be suited (at least straightaway) to dog parks and off leash play areas in case she gets scared and runs off
- a secure yard without access to under the house (where she has previously tried to escape and hide)
- a family that aren’t wanting to take her everywhere with them such as cafes and busy
walking areas – at least not initially, she may grow in confidence over time with this.
- Preferably no cats, although she is living with one at the moment, he barely tolerates her
constant sniffing of his butt!
- But the NUMBER 1 thing Stelly wants is a doggy friend.
