About Darla ~ 1yr Old Cattle Dog X(On Trial 19/7/22)
Introducing Darla – our resident animagus! Darla is a 1yr Old female blue cattle dog x (her foster mum thinks she may be part witch due to her ability to change into other animals at will!).
Darla shows off her impersonation skills day and night, leaving her foster family in awe, as well as fits of laughter. For Darla’s first impression, she will give you the emu drum! This is something she displays when out walking and trying to get all of the smells into her little nose all at once. She sniffs so intensely that she sounds like an emu drumming for a mate. Luckily, we are yet to meet another emu out on our walks, but we recommend you stay away from Blackbutt Reserve just in case.
Darla LOVES going on walks morning and night, however was very new to walking on a lead when she first came into care so is still learning some etiquette such as not pulling on the lead and calmly approaching other dogs. Darla is responding really well to training but this will need to continue in her new home.
Darla LOVES playing with other dogs and will attempt to get their attention with her next trick which is bouncing like a springbok! Darla shows off her uncanny likeness to the African antelope’s very high jumps into the air, rendering other dogs speechless and wanting to catch her immediately. Darla also loves to wrestle, which she does for hours a day with her current foster brother. A home where she has a companion dog to play with would be ideal due to her young age and energy levels. And for her final trick, Darla snaps her mouth like a crocodile to incite a playing riot when with other dogs. She snaps her jaws showing off her best impression of a crocodile not for prey, but for PLAY. This is a behaviour that always gets a response from her foster brother who just cannot resist this prompt to chase her. Darla loves to be chased, not the chaser which makes her very compatible with most dogs.
Darla is house trained with no accidents in her foster home. Even with the door closed she will indicate to her foster family when she needs to go to the bathroom. Darla is untested with cats; however, seems a little too eager to sniff them when on walks with her foster family so this might not be ideal. Being a young dog with little experience in the real world, she will need ongoing training to walk on the lead and to grow her confidence in the yard to not react to other people and noises. Darla is extremely food and attention motivated so training has so far been really successful and this will need to continue in her new environment.
Darla doesn’t dig or try to escape when her humans are out of the house as she has a lot of play time prior to them leaving, as well as a lot of toys and other entertainment in the yard for her and her foster brother to play with. Being a working breed, she will need lots of toys, bones and other enrichments in her everyday life. For this Darla is a darling; rewarding you with cuddles galore. Darla loves her humans and she shows this by wanting to sit on your lap for pats or just by laying at your feet with her feet touching yours. She hasn’t quite grasped the concept of personal space and loves to sit on you if you will let her. Darla loves her human foster brother who is primary school aged. She is gentle and seems to sense what level of play is appropriate for a human her size. She’s untested with younger children; however, this witnessed behaviour would indicate that there wouldn’t be
any major issues.
