About Stanley
Stanely, as all Catahoula Leopard Dogs are, is wickedly smart, a little bit stubborn, and LOVES to train and learn! This breed of dog isn’t for the faint-hearted and requires someone who understands the sweetness of them, but also the working/hunting breed side of them.
Stanley loves to learn and has picked up his commands pretty well. He is learning to co-exist with his foster humans, though he does like to test the boundaries, again, typical of the breed. Stanley is such a beautiful-looking boy, who at times, likes to cuddle and sit with his humans when he is allowed (cos, boundaries!) He can also be vocal, and mouthy, and loves to let you know when he is unhappy!
Stanley’s energy level is currently medium but as he gets older, he will have a higher energy level. His foster carers have found that two separate walks -sniffy, environmental, or training walks work really well for him, this will also need to be continued in his new home to keep him from getting bored.
This is absolutely not a backyard dog, not a dog you can do the same walks every day with.. he will need to keep his busy mind focused. He does have a witching hour and it seems to change daily, mostly in the afternoons and always when he realizes his foster carers are preoccupied. Again, typical of the breed, they will very quickly work out a new family’s routine and where the gaps are in training and boundaries and will push them, every chance he gets.
He would also suit a dog trainer or behaviorist looking for a wonderful sight/hearing impaired dog to show the world what he is truly capable of! This boy could do amazing things, living with a trainer or someone who is very invested in it. Stanley also highly values his food and toys, given this penchant for wanting allllll the toys and things. This will need to be worked on in his new home… this type of training involves a ‘trade system’ for anything you need to take off me because at the moment I feel the need to get a bit grumpy or obstinate if you try and take it without swapping me something else cool!
TRAINING:
Stanley has mastered sit and is currently working on lie down. He has just started training to walking on a lead, he is doing pretty well but is prone to pulling. Given his penchant for this and his breed, his new home must consistently train him on lead to ensure he knows to walk nicely and at pace with his humans. He is also working on stay command which will be extremely beneficial for him when he starts learning and practicing his recall.
Stanley is also learning to ‘settle’ in his crate or on a mat in a designated spot. Like all working breeds, they can find it hard to ‘switch off’ so this command will need to be continued in his new home. He must learn to switch off, settle and calm down during the day, so he’s not always ‘on the go’.
He is very talkative and lets everyone know when he is not happy. He does calm down but it's something to be aware of that he will talk back. So far, he has only been left by himself a handful of times and only for a few hours at a time. He is great in his crate though and settles pretty quickly with not too much crying or sass.
He is just exceptional at training and loves a challenge. He would make a prime candidate for luring, tracking, or noseworks… particularly tracking/nose works we think he’d absolutely LOVE, given his breed.
He loves praise as well as his liver treats, so to keep him guessing and keep his attention, his foster carers are alternating treats and praise with his training.
He is learning sign and touch signals, due to the possibility of his sight deteriorating in the future, his training will need to be continued with these signs AND touch cues and he is learning all of this very quickly! 💙
SOCIALISATION:
Stanley would suit a home with confident, dog-savvy kids 12yo+ that would like to be involved in his training. This is essential for his new home so everyone who lives there understands and is committed and consistent with his training. He has met a number of large or bigger dogs before, and he loves dogs. He can be a little full and it will be up to his new parents to step in and moderate any interactions. At the moment his socialisation has been kept on lead and long lead.
He loves humans and enjoys nothing more than a cuddle or snuggle when all his training is done for the day and all his needs have been met. He is currently learning his boundaries in the home, and is working on not jumping on the couch (only when allowed/asked up for a cuddle) as well as threshold training (not to run through doorways and to sit and wait). This also goes for his crate training where his foster carers are working on him being calm and snoozing in the crate.
Due to his strong prey drive, we recommend no cats/pocket pets/birds or chooks for this boy. He may be fine with larger livestock animals but training, boundaries and manners are non-negotiable if he was to be rehomed on an acre or hobby farm. So far a lot of the dogs he plays with have been larger breeds that are older than him. He would do best with a similar-sized adult dog, female, well trained, and calm that he can learn from.
CRATE/TOILET TRAINING:
Stanley is currently crate trained and stays in his crate when told to as well as overnight with his foster carers currently letting him out to the toilet at 5am before heading back to the crate until 7 am. This is a routine he has quickly picked up and must be continued in his new home.
He naps in his crate and is quite good with this routine also. If he has had a busy morning and he is overtired and too energetic and silly, he is placed in the crate for a nap for as long as he needs. He is mostly house trained and doing really well with this.
LEAD TRAINING:
Stanley has only just started walking on a lead and he is currently learning not to pull and to walk calmly with his carer when out and about.
ENRICHMENT:
Just like a typical puppy Stanley loves to chew and dig, so it's important to give him other appropriate outlets for this such as a sandpit. Enrichment toys will be a must, to work his clever brain; puzzles, chews, go-slow bowls, licki mats, kongs etc. Encouraging this chewing and digging behaviour (maybe down at the beach in the sand for digging) is a healthy way to release all that pent-up puppy energy and to display their natural drive in a healthy, positive and safe way!
MEDICAL:
Stanley does have limited hearing and is blind in his left eye, he seems to respond well to movements and signs at the moment, but as a precaution, he is learning touch cues as well as hand signals. 💙
LAST WORD FROM HIS FOSTER CARERS:
Stanley is a typical Catahoula and is very intelligent, wickedly so! But he can also be a gentle and soft boy… he is a loveable, affectionate, smart dog. He does go up to his humans when they are sad or hurt and is always trying to make them feel better. We can’t convey how amazing this dog could be, and will be, for the right people who are absolutely committed to his high needs and training. There is something about him which you’ll fall in love with. With consistent training and love he will be much more than just a dog, he’ll be a well balance of the family!
Local adoption is preferable but Stanley is available for interstate adoption, for the right person. 💙
