About Major
We are looking for a very special home for a very special dog.
When MAJOR came into care earlier this year, we thought he was just another handsome, healthy and happy Blue Cattle Dog pup. However, over time he developed intermittent left forelimb lameness and eventually he underwent surgery to repair a cartilage problem in his left shoulder. See Medical Notes below for more information.
Post surgery, Major's prognosis is good. Now he just needs a loving forever home and family who think he's as special as we do.
This is what his foster mum says about him:
"Major is a lover, not a fighter and whoever welcome him into their home and heart will be well rewarded. He loves playing with squeaky balls, especially those with a rope attached so he can fling them about and make them squeak. He happily entertains himself if he has toys that he can safely chew on. During the day, he will check in for a cuddle if he's been outside for some time. He loves a comfortable bed, especially if it's nearby so he can see and hear you. He's a clever and obedient boy and responds well to a tone in the voice. "Gentle" is all I need to say if he gets a bit excited. Major has a very soft mouth and plays "tug a rope" gently with my old Jack Russell, who's only half his size. He loves an afternoon bone, which he takes outside and sits in the shade to enjoy. Major adores a ride in the car and walks well on a harness. He doesn't pull and is learning to walk on a short lead beside me. He is a good eater and enjoys vegetables, raw chicken necks, kibble, yoghurt, sardines and so on."
Check out the video for more commentary from Major's foster mum, Cheryl.
Major loves the company of humans, hasn't met a dog he doesn't love and has lived successfully with a cat.
Preference will be given to a home where someone is around most of the time and there is another compatible dog for Major to hang out with.
If you are interested in meeting this darling boy and can offer him a suitable, safe and loving forever home, PLEASE COMPLETE THE ONLINE ADOPTION APPLICATION at https://southerndownsark.com.au/apply-to-adopt/ and one of our volunteers will be in touch.
Major's adoption fee is $750 and he is desexed, chipped and vaccinated.
He is available for interstate adoption.
Medical notes
Major developed left forelimb lameness and was diagnosed with left shoulder Osteochondrosis Dissecans (an inflammatory condition that occurs when the diseased cartilage separates from the underlying bone) and mild right elbow dysplasia.
Surgical removal of the diseased cartilage was undertaken in October 2022 to relieve the inflammation and pain, allow the joint surface to remodel and minimise the development of further joint disease.
Major has recovered well, his lameness has improved substantially and will continue to do so. His prognosis is good, especially as surgery was performed early in the course of the disease.
Weight and exercise control are important to avoid unnecessary stress on the joint. Leash walking, light jogging and swimming are recommended.
