About Riker ~ 15mo Great Dane X(On trial 25/6/22)
Let me introduce the most gorgeous boy on the block, Lt Riker (Riker for short). A handsome, playful Great Dane X Greyhound. He is about 15 months old and is looking for a family to love him, give him lots of cuddles and attention and, most importantly, take him for walks and play with him.
Riker just thrives on human interaction. He has boundless energy and loves playing with his Frisbee and tug rope. He has been having daily visits from an older, female dog and just loves playing with her and doing zoomies around the garden with her. He has also visited a younger GSD and had great playdates with her.
Riker has learnt many things since coming into care. He is toilet trained, responds to “sit”, “lie down” and “off”. He will also relieve himself on demand and if you are taking him out in the car etc, this can be very handy. He will sit and stay whilst his dinner is put down and shows no food aggression or food protective behaviours. He is used to a crate and will happily doze on his bed in there during the day if he needs a quick snooze. At night, he sleeps on his bed in his foster carer’s bedroom.
He needs ongoing lead training as he gets very excitable and will pull to go and greet every single person he sees on his journey. At the same time, if he sees another dog, he desperately wants to go and say hello and will pull, yelp, bark and cry to do so. Whilst this may seem frightening, he does not show any aggression at all; he literally just wants to greet the other dog and pay. As a young, largish strong dog, he needs firm management in this situation.
Riker would be best suited to a family with an active lifestyle and who will understand his need for exercise and mental stimulation. Another dog for company would be a bonus. As he gets excited when playing with you in the garden, he will jump up and “nip” in a puppy fashion, as if playing with his siblings. This is not done with aggression, just puppy playfulness. As such, he would not be suited to be with young children or frail elderly persons at the moment, until he grows up a bit. His carer is currently working hard to modify this behaviour.
Riker has a penchant for helping in the garden and if left to his own devices, will dig some holes for your consideration! When he came into care, Riker was under-nourished and is slowly putting on weight but sometimes requires encouragement to eat and can be finicky with his food. He is accustomed to being an inside dog / family member and whoever adopts Riker will end up with a very loving, affectionate, intelligent companion, who desperately wants to please.
For more information on Riker, please contact his carer Karyn on drn.karyn@gmail.com, Riker is in foster care in Salamander Bay, NSW and is available for adoption interstate.
His adoption fee is $400 and he is desexed, vaccinated, treated for fleas and worms and microchipped. If you are interested in adopting Riker, please fill out the adoption application form here https://tinyurl.com/drnadopt.
