Born deaf, Milly (nicknamed “Boo”) is a typical playful, cheeky, 4-month old Blue Heeler (Australian Cattle Dog). She is incredibly gorgeous, but she will need a very special forever home that can provide the lifelong dedication and guidance she needs to not let her disability get in the way of life.
Highly food motivated, she has quickly mastered “sit. She’s also getting very good at recall, even from a moderate distance – as long as you have her direct attention and guarantee a food reward. All this in a few short weeks demonstrates that she’s intelligent and has the capacity to learning with clear, consistent hand signals. With regular, short sessions and lots of patience she’ll continue to progress, particularly under the guidance of an experienced trainer.
She walks nicely on leash – although she insists on being the leader when walking with other companions. A little shy at first with new doggy friends, she doesn’t take long to fire-up and move to hard-core play. Her lack of hearing does not impair her energy level or confidence. Early days, but she is showing signs of being a ball-fetcher and is very keen on water – but still learning to swim. In stealth mode, she’ll steal socks then dart off. She won’t hesitate to leap up or under furniture – almost cat-like. She’s a very inquisitive and fearless explorer – which can get her into trouble and put her in danger at times.
Two good exercise sessions every day will be needed to contain her energy level and allow her to focus on basic training. She’ll then switch to smooch mode and sleep at your feet for hours. After a busy day she loves to curl up and cuddle with you on the couch for some quiet TV time. Her best life will be with humans who are mostly at home and a doggy companion that is incredibly patient and mature enough to guide Milly by demonstrating acceptable behaviour. She can be very intense at play. Being deaf, she does not hear warnings to stop or slow down, so it’s vital that her fur- sibling has rock-solid resilience and tolerance.
She has not yet mastered toilet training, which is a work-in-progress. Very typical of a precocious toddler, she can be demanding and quite cheeky – she does not like being told “no” and sometimes barks in defiance. This calls for stellar patience at times but with a calm, non-reactive response she quickly learns that she won’t win at this game! It is imperative that her discipline comes from a controlled, composed and consistent approach, without any aggression or hostility.
