About Benji ~ 1yr Old Kelpie X (On trial 17/06/22)
PLEASE NOTE: Dog Rescue Newcastle provide individual listings specific to each foster dog that comes through our doors. Each listing outlines the specific requirements, and home that we are looking for. Should you submit an application OR inquiry and NOT receive a response within 5 business days (Monday-Friday), please understand that you have not met the specific requirements of the foster carer and will not be proceeding to the next stage. Please do not be disheartened or discouraged if you do not receive a reply, this simply means you were not a suitable match at this time. Dog Rescue Newcastle reserve the right to not reply to unsuitable applicants and will not tolerate bullying, intimidation or harassment of our volunteers.
This quirky little man is Benji…..He is approx. a 1yo Kelpie x Dachshund. He is more the size of a standard Daschund with some kelpie features. He is a very handsome fellow, but he does require a special person/family who will not only accept him for who he currently is but will work with him patiently to let him become the man that he doesn’t know he is yet.
The areas in which Benji needs help and guidance with are lead walking, house training (it’s a work in progress) and his over excitement towards some dogs. He can be interpreted as being an anxious fellow who can be quite vocal at times, but it’s more likely that these current behaviours are most reflective of his Kelpie and Daschund traits, which just need re-directing with training, a regular routine, exercise and mental games. On the flip side, Benji is a sweet, friendly and affectionate boy, who loves cuddles. He sleeps inside and loves to lounge with you.
Since being in foster care, Benji has made friends with the resident cat, is happily enjoying the company of an older foster dog and is loving the attention he gets from his young human carer. He has also learnt to sit and come when called.
Being a kelpie x Daschund, Benji is an energetic and active boy who loves a good game of tug-o-war and zoomies around the yard. He loves his daily walks, but he does need to learn manners when it comes to being on a lead and out in public. Loose lead training will benefit everyone and will help teach Benji the appropriate social etiquette. Again, because of his breed traits, Benji is a busy boy and when he isn’t being exercised, mental stimulation games will help burn that energy and calm him down.
Benji is currently living with an older dog, whom he adores, but if there is another furry member in his new family, they will need to be a more relaxed, easy going dog of similar size, where Benji doesn’t feel intimidated. Ideally as well, Benji would love it if he has his people at home more often than not, especially in the beginning whilst he settles. Working with Benji and getting him to trust and be ok with being at home alone when his people are out is highly recommended.
This boy just really needs to know, trust and believe that his people have his back. If you are going to be the one to have Benji’s back, please fill out the adoption questionnaire or for inquiries only, contact his carer via email – bec.engel@hotmail.com

Benji is currently in foster care in the Maitland area (Hunter Region NSW) and all potentially successful applicants, including existing family dogs will be required to meet Benji. His adoption fee is $800 and he is desexed, microchipped, vaccinated and treated for fleas and worms.
