About Buddy ~ 3yr Old Kelpie(On Trial 9/9/22)
PLEASE NOTE: Dog Rescue Newcastle provide individual listings specific to each foster dog that comes through our doors. Each listing outlines the specific requirements, and home that we are looking for. Should you submit an application OR inquiry and NOT receive a response within 5 business days (Monday-Friday), please understand that you have not met the specific requirements of the foster carer and will not be proceeding to the next stage. Please do not be disheartened or discouraged if you do not receive a reply, this simply means you were not a suitable match at this time. Dog Rescue Newcastle reserve the right to not reply to unsuitable applicants and will not tolerate bullying, intimidation or harassment of our volunteers.
Calling all Kelpie lovers! This big 28kg ball of cuteness is 3-year-old Buddy! He loves scratches, soft toys, treats, giving kisses, balls, flopping dramatically to the ground and crossing his paws, and cuddles on the couch. Once bonded with a human he will be your best friend and shadow for life.
He currently spends his days with his foster sister Ella, a kelpie cross, and his foster mum and dad. He greets us every day with a toy in his mouth, full body wag and helicopter tail. He loves playing with Ella and the four of us do everything together. Buddy loves being a part of the family and being welcomed inside. He’s never out of eyesight.
Like most kelpies he is a very smart boy and, with his willingness to please his human (and love of treats), he is very easy to train. He has basic commands down like sit, shake, lie, stand, wait, eat etc. down and we’ve started to work on some trick and agility training with him.
Buddy hasn’t been exposed to a great many things in his life so he is quite hesitant and nervous and will become reactive in new situations, especially around new people (mainly men). Due to this Buddy’s boundaries MUST be respected and he needs to be given the space to warm to people in his own time. This will be an ongoing issue when Buddy is introduced to strangers. Due to this he would fare better in a quieter household, without young children, and not a lot of new people coming and going. He will have a 4-week trial period rather than the conventional 2-week trial period due to this.
Ongoing training with new people will be imperative to minimise his negative reactions. We have been in contact with one of the qualified trainers at DRN and we will pass on the information regarding training that has already been started with Buddy. The trainer will be able to provide advice and assistance to his new family during the trial period.
He’s currently cohabiting with Charles the cat, and has shown some obsessive behaviours towards him. So, a house with no cat, would be best. Buddy is leash reactive with strangers, both dog and human variety (particularly men), and will bark at them. We have been doing redirection training in wide open spaces with people and dogs and this has been going well, but this is something that will need to be worked on further after adoption. He will also bark in the house when someone knocks on the door or he sees them walk past the house.
He is able to be redirected with treats and is responding to training well.
Buddy MUST have daily exercise and mental stimulation to be the best/happiest dog he can be. We think he would thrive in dogs’ sports such as agility or obedience. As he loves his humans so much, he needs to be welcomed inside when the family are home and included in his new family’s life. Buddy would be best in a household where somebody is home with him most of the day. He is an amazing dog; he just needs to find his family that is willing to put in a little training and a lot of love to make him feel secure and happy with his spot in this world. The amount of love, fun and laughs you will get from him he is DEFINITELY worth the effort.
