About Akamaru
PLEASE NOTE THAT UNFORTUNATELY WE ARE UNABLE TO FLY OUR ANIMALS EITHER WITHIN WA OR INTERSTATE
NAME: Akamaru ('Aka')
BEFORE RESCUE: Came to SAFE Esperance from the pound
BREED: German Shepherd
Breed Traits: originally bred to herd flocks, is intelligent and makes a great working dog in many areas. This high energy dog needs a lot of activity and exercise, and is otherwise likely to chew and bark, obedience training is a must. German Shepherds make devoted family pets and courageous protectors and early exposure and socialisation will make them more accepting of different people and circumstances. They love to be with their humans so if left alone for long periods they can become anxious. They can have quite a high prey drive.
ASSETS: Affectionate, friendly, outgoing, confident, active, sweet and playful just about sums up Aka! She’s an absolute sweetheart with a big personality, a few little quirks and a ton of love to offer the right family.
FAVOURITE THINGS: Balls! She’s a tad ball obsessed and will chase and chew on them for as long as she can. She has a funny little quirk where she takes the ball and dunks it in water or just drops it in any nearby bowl or bucket. She also loves the beach and is happy to run and play and would happily sit and cuddle with her person all day, she’s very affectionate!
ENDEARING FEATURES: She’s incredibly sweet and loving and adores cuddles and being close to you. She has a funny way of drinking too, she just shoves her whole face in the bowl and takes big gulps! She can also open doors with push down handles.
OTHER ANIMALS: She gets on well with other friendly dogs once she’s comfortable with them (has lived with Kelpies) and could live with one after gentle introduction - she is currently sharing her foster home with a large breed male. She is friendly towards cats so could possibly live with a dog savvy cat that will stand its ground after gentle, supervised introduction.
GENERAL INFO: Aka tugs a bit on the lead so would be better with a Halti or, even better, some lead training, she's smart so would be worth the effort. She’s housetrained and rarely barks. She isn’t destructive and is pretty active for an older girl. She knows a few commands such as sit, stay and shake.
ESSENTIALS for Aka:
** An active, loving home where someone is there for most of the day on a permanent basis or she has a similarly aged active doggy friend to keep her company and play with.
** Being an active girl, she needs good daily exercise so an active home that is willing to involve her in family activities.
** Aka needs a large. fenced, secure yard with grass and plenty of interesting things for her to sniff.
** Aka loves to be with her family so needs to be allowed inside the home as and when she likes and to sleep inside at night.
** Being a German Shepherd Aka requires regular grooming to remove dead undercoat and keep her coat healthy, this really is essential.
Aka could live with older, dog-savvy, gentle children who will play with her and can recognize her signals to give her space when needed.
If Aka sounds like the perfect fit for your family, please send an enquiry and we’ll be in touch soon.
