Tully came to us here as an urgent surrender from a local horse riding school where she was at risk of being euthanised. On arrival Tully was quite upset about her tummy and flanks being touched and had a tucked up appearance, straight away we suspected she had stomach ulcers. She was treated with Ulcershield Oral Paste for 4 weeks and thankfully that all cleared up and she has a healthy weight on her now. Tully also arrived with some of the knobbiest knees I have seen and was noticeably uncomfortable walking. After a vet exam it was discovered that Tully has well advanced arthritis in those knees and there wasn’t much we could do except give her some freedom in the paddocks to stretch and move and then hope that her body will relax.
Fast forward a few months and Tully is now one of the sassiest ladies of the paddock! She is very mobile and besides a bit of an odd stride, you would never know she was an older lady who arrived quite sore, scared and upset. Tully is a delight to work with, her ground manners are impeccable and I truly can’t fault her, honestly one of the sweetest horses at the sanctuary. She is great to catch in the paddock (especially with carrots!), loves to be groomed and doted over and she has learned to communicate with her humans when we are doing something that might be uncomfortable on her knees – like having her hooves trimmed.
Tully would be best suited to a home that would like a pleasant companion mare for other horses (and for yourself of course!) Tully will need to remain active in a paddock or have regular hand walks to keep her knees moving, having other companions to follow around in a paddock would be more than suitable. If you’re after a very gentle mare to share some time with and enjoy spoiling rotten, this is your gal. I really can’t express enough how gentle and delightful Tully is, she is the type of horse that would happily be lead around by the most beginner of beginner humans.
Preference will be given to applicants who live close by so Tully wouldn’t have to travel a long distance, transport can also be arranged through Elysian Fields Sanctuary if required.
If you think you can offer Tully the perfect forever home, please complete an application, we would love to hear from you! Tully deserves a life of luxury after many, many years of hard work.
Medical notes
Tully has advanced arthritis in her knees, however, she is currently keeping up with a herd of 19 other horses in her 20-acre paddock and shows no signs of pain. Tully will never be able to be ridden again but has many happy years ahead of her as a companion or gentle lead line horse.
Adoption details
Congratulations on making the big decision to welcome one of these incredible horses into your home! Adopting a horse is not to be considered lightly as these wonderful big animals need lots of love, care and attention. A rescue horse is not your typical horse, some of them have been badly abused and neglected, some of them have phobias that they may carry with them forever, they have had to overcome some pretty scary demons from their past and need your help to support them for many years to come in their long journey.
With all big commitments, there will be challenges, but I can guarantee that the loyal companionship you and your rescue horse will share going through the journey together will be worth it.
We are big advocates for educating and training all of our horses as best as we can to ensure that they will have all the ground manners expected of a domesticated equine. Every horse has their different quirks and not all horses will suit all homes. We will always do our best to match all applicants with the best possible horse.
PLEASE BE 100% SURE YOU CAN PROVIDE THE RIGHT HOME BEFORE APPLYING!
As mentioned earlier, horses are not a light commitment, they require years and years of appropriate handling, diets, farrier and veterinary care - they are also not cheap! We thoroughly investigate every application to make sure it is as perfect match as we can possible achieve, we require professional references on your application and will conduct a virtual/live property check.
