The future for Sumo is looking pretty sad through no fault of his own. Sumo’s owners had allowed him to eat so much that he has become obese – and they wanted to put him to sleep when he developed urinary issues as a result of being so fat.

Sumo is in desperate need of a medium to long-term foster carer who can keep him on a strict diet and help him lose weight. He will need to be the only pet in the house as he will eat everything in sight if given the chance.

Sumo is a very loving, affectionate boy who wants to snuggle into your arms and give you headbutts to show how much he loves you. Sumo adores being held and cuddled. And for a big goofy guy, he has a tiny kitten-like meow. He is a big 7.1kg boy with an even bigger heart. Although small in length, Sumo has a very round belly.

Sumo was taken to a vet clinic when he got a bladder infection and was straining to go to the toilet as a result of being so overweight. Instead of committing to helping him lose weight and give him vet care, his owners decided to have him euthanized.

Thankfully the vet intervened and Sumo is in temporary care – but he urgently needs a quiet foster home where he can transform into a slim Sumo!

Sumo is on very specific food that will be provided. He has been an indoors-only cat all his life so he needs to be kept indoors. He is fantastic company and deserves this chance at living a long and happy life.

Sumo is perfectly litter trained and does not spray. He will need a big litter box though, just so he can move around. We are happy to provide this for you.

Sumo needs someone who can identify when he may be having a flare up and seek vet treatment, which we will also pay for at our clinic in Noble Park (so you need to be able to drive him there and back). His foster carer will need to keep him on a very strict diet and keep tabs of his weigh-ins at the vet.

You will also need to play with him to get him active; laser light chasing, fishing rod toy dangling, anything to get some daily movement in his life.

Without a foster carer to step in URGENTLY, Sumo will have to go to the pound - and he will not be a good candidate for rehoming there. Sumo really needs this chance for the life we know he deserves. None of what has happened to him is Sumo’s fault and he shouldn’t have to pay for someone’s neglect.

Sumo will need to be in care for several months, at a minimum, while he loses weight. Once he has slimmed down we will then look for a permanent home for this boy using all the rescue resources at our disposal.

Ideally we are looking for someone who lives in Melbourne's south-east or who can drive Sumo to appointments in Noble Park as needed.
