About Bruce
** LOCATED IN BRIBIE ISLAND - QLD **
Hi Friends I'm Bruce. I am 8 months old and 19kg, I'll probably be a bigger dog once full grown (35 kg ish ), maybe more, as I love food.
I have a beautiful nature, but am definitely still a pup and am looking for an experienced GSP / dog owner who will work with me so I can reach my potential and be the best doggo I can be.
THE POSITIVES
House trained. Able to use doggy door.
Not a fence jumper / much of a jumper at all. Good with kids 8+.
Zero aggressive behaviour ever shown to people or other dogs.
More attached to the husband and would be a great “bloke’s dog”.
Loves playing with toys, and a good tummy rub.
Intelligent, food orientated, and learns routines quickly. Has potential to be an amazing dog for the right person/s who can dedicate some time to training him. Seems to be really good as a running partner on the leash. Would be a great exercise companion for an active person.
DESTRUCTIVE BEHAVIOUR
Bruce has been given an abundance of toys (Lickimats, Kongs) but has shown a tendency to dig, and to chew items. He is a shoe thief and will take them and fall asleep with them (so far no shoe chewing).
SOCIAL SKILLS
“barrels around like a storm in a teacup” and “unsocialised ADHD puppy syndrome” have been used to describe Bruce. Quite simply, he hasn’t grown up yet, and hasn’t had the training in previous homes. His idea of play time is long hours of hard-out rough and tumble – hanging onto ears, cheeks, tails and legs of other dogs (which they may not appreciate) and barking at them.
He can be hyperactive and want to do ‘zoomies’ around the house. If left home alone inside, he would most definitely chew something up and bark.
ON-LEASH BEHAVIOUR
Generally walks well on a lead, particularly with a slip collar or halti harness; and travels well in the car.
However, if he sees another dog or animal (kangaroo) and sometimes people - he will become overstimulated and fixated, lunging, barking and doing anything he can to get to that animal (no aggression shown, just high arousal). After the animal has passed, he will still remain difficult to refocus and calm down. If introduced, he only wants to play and be patted – no signs of aggression noted in this behaviour.
FOOD MANNERS
The high arousal and excitability come out again at dinner time as Bruce is “nuts about food”. He is trained to sit and wait for food, will take treats nicely from the hand, and food bowl can be removed from humans with no issues. However, he will guzzle his food very quickly and move straight to any other dog’s plate to take over. He is jealous if another dog is given a treat and will burr up in dominance which intimidates the other dog and they retreat.
A trainer has visited the family, and Buce will come with a slip collar harness for his walks; and a slow feeder bowl. He needs a confident pet owner who will be consistent in training and setting boundaries and may benefit from kenneling at night.-
