About Denzel (Located in Surrey Hills)
SEEKING LONG TERM FOSTER FOR SPECIAL NEEDS CAT
Denzel, through absolutely no fault of his own, is a cat that many would have given up on.
When he came into care at BFFR in 2021, he was in absolutely horrifying condition. Denzel was saved from an incredibly heartbreaking hoarding situation. He, along with countless other cats, had been living on a property battling starvation and disease - in Denzel’s case, he had also endured debilitating chronic illness that had been left untreated for a very long time.
He was not only severely unwell, but was also unhandled by people. Many would have considered euthanasia in his case due to how long his rehabilitation would be, but we knew from the light in his eyes and his admirable will to survive through terrible trauma that this little man wanted to live, and we knew we needed to do everything in our power to give him the opportunity he deserves to thrive.
Denzel has brought so much joy to our lives since that day. Being unhandled, understandably he was originally terrified of people, but with some patience, love and lots of treats, he transformed into a cat we never could have even imagined he would be.
This boy is QUIRKY! He’s silly and goofy, a total trip hazard (as in, he wants to wrap himself around your legs as you walk!), loves his cuddles (will jump up on the counter/cat tree so he can put his paws up on your shoulders and give you some loving head butts) and loves to chase butterflies/bugs and zoom around like a kitten. In his current foster home, he throughly enjoys spending time out in the backyard on his harness. He adores frolicking in the grass. This little man absolutely LOVES life, and dotes on his people. He wants to be someone’s sidekick, his loyalty knows no bounds. He shows his gratitude every day that he was given a chance to truly live, and his zest for life is contagious. You’re always smiling when Denzel’s around ❤️
It has been a long, winding road to recovery for our darling Denzel, a road that we are still paving. He is battling a chronic skin condition that took many months to manage, but we are finally maintaining his skin and coat with a specialised diet and topical treatments that will need to be continued ongoing.
He has had many, many visits to specialists to attempt to diagnose his condition, but this little guy is a medical mystery! He has presented with some concerning symptoms such as swollen organs, signs of neurological damage and potential partial or full deafness. Due to his FIV+ status, it has been impossible for vets to diagnose exactly what is causing his multitude of bodily quirks, however he has shown with his enthusiasm about life and all its wonders that he is not all that bothered by it all.
We are looking for a superhero to be a long term carer/foster to adopt for Denzel. Due to his very specific dietary needs, he ideally needs to be the only pet in his household to prevent him eating the foods of other cats/dogs. He would love someone who can be home with him a lot, as he is so affectionate and loves to be around people. We have seen that the more his people are around, the more his condition improves, and the happier and healthier he is!
We know it is a big ask to take on a chronically ill, potentially palliative cat to care for long term. We know that finding his special person may be a challenge, but we also know whole heartedly that Denzel deserves the world. He deserves to find his person. He deserves the chance that many people would have denied him. Are you Denzel’s superhero?

Medical notes
The adoption fee includes desexing, microchip, current vaccination, flea and worm treatment while in care.
Denzel has multiple complex medical needs. He suffers from food allergies and an auto immune condition which affects his skin.
Denzel has tested positive for FIV but has no symptoms.
Studies have found that FIV+ cats often outlive their FIV- friends.
http://www.catchat.org/fiv.html "A ten-year FIV Monitoring Project was carried out at Glasgow Veterinary School involving 26 cats and the results indicated that a higher percentage of FIV negative cats died during the period of the study than FIV positive cats, and that FIV infection did not affect the cats' life expectancy.
You can also find more information here: http://fivcats.com/FIV/fiv_mixed_households.html
Dr Diane D. Addie (Lecturer in Veterinary Virology, University of Glasgow) said "at least 3 studies in FIV positive cats have shown a life span equal to uninfected cats."
A fourteen year study by Maureen Hutchison B.Sc, BVMS, MRCVS (veterinary adviser to the Cat Action Trust) found that FIV-positive cats are more likely to die by being killed in road accidents or to be alive and well into their twilight years than they are to die from any FIV related condition."
