About Maize
PLEASE NOTE THAT UNFORTUNATELY WE ARE UNABLE TO FLY OUR ANIMALS EITHER WITHIN WA OR INTERSTATE
NAME: Maize
BEFORE SAFE ESPERANCE: Came to SAFE Esperance from the pound.
BREED: American Staffordshire Terrier x Kelpie x Bull Terrier
Breed Traits: American Staffordshire Terriers are quite high energy, playful, affectionate and intelligent but do require training as they can be headstrong. They are very social with adults and children and are extremely loyal but can suffer from separation anxiety if left for long periods. Their sociability with dogs is a facet that needs work from an early age.
Kelpies are high energy and intelligent, so may need to be found a 'job'. They get bored easily if their brains are not worked, so training is a must. They are loyal and very social with people and dogs.
Bull Terriers love their people and are very affectionate and sensitive. They don't like to be left alone for long periods or can be destructive. They have high energy and love to be busy so need plenty of exercise and playtime. Their high prey drive precludes smaller pet species such as cats. They are trainable but stubborn and not for novice owners.

ASSETS: Easy-going, affectionate, friendly, active, playful, quiet, sensitive and very sweet. Due to her past Maize can be shy and fearful in new situations and with new people but she has a ton of love to give to the right home once they have gained her trust and built up her confidence.
FAVOURITE THINGS: Maize loves to play fetch and enjoys her chew toys. She enjoys time at the beach swimming and paddling but most of all she loves cuddle time with her person!
ENDEARING FEATURES: She's incredibly sweet and affectionate and will snuggle up to her person whenever she gets the opportunity even snuggling under the blankets. When playing ball she will bring the ball back and make sure you know that she wants you to throw it again! Everyone loves her and they say how pretty she is.
OTHER ANIMALS: She gets on well with other friendly dogs when she is not restricted but is generally not that interested and if challenged will avoid conflict. She can be a little jealous around other dogs and does try to take charge so would be best as an only dog. She is overly focused on small animals, so we won't home her with any for their safety.
GENERAL INFO:
Maize has been trained to walk nicely on the lead but will pull when she is stressed. She is housetrained but can have the odd accident so will initially need some gentle signals to remind her to toilet outside. Maize rarely barks but will for attention when playing and if someone is at the door. She's doing great with her command training and knows sit, stay, leave it, come and would benefit greatly with ongoing training to grow her confidence. Due to her bad start in life she can be afraid of loud noises and busy areas with lots of people and cars - Maize needs slow and gentle exposure so that she doesn't become overwhelmed and anxious. When out and about her carer protects her from feeling cornered or pressured when meeting new people as she will attempt to avoid interactions.
She is not destructive and has a medium energy level.
She is being fostered on a farm and at present goes to work with her carer each day and is lovely company but will howl if left alone for too long. We would love her to go to a home where someone can take her to work or spend most of the day with her.
ESSENTIALS for Maize:
* A calm, loving, adult only home where someone is there for most of the day on a permanent basis or can take her to work/with them when they go out.
* For Maize to truly blossom she needs to be the only pet in the home.
* An owner who can read her body language and has an interest in training her to help her through her fears and anxiety and grow her confidence - this may require classes, patience and positive reinforcement.
* Good daily exercise, trips out in the car and being involved in family activities.
* Maize needs a fenced, secure yard with some grass and interesting things for her to sniff and explore.
* Maize needs to be with her people so has to be allowed inside the home as she chooses, and to sleep inside at night - she is very well behaved in the home.
