Mackleroy is an intelligent, affectionate, energetic and playful dog. If you want a lazy dog, then Mackleroy is not the dog for you. Being a 1 year old, he is still considered a puppy and has some puppy traits, so we recommend that he goes to an active home preferably with a compatible resident dog. Mackleroy is friendly with other dogs but maybe a little clumsy at times for little dogs. He loves cuddles with his family, rides in the car, sun baking, belly rubs and playing inside or out.
He can happily occupy himself but hasn’t been left alone for long periods of time. We have left him alone a few hours but think he would get used to being on his own during work hours, especially if he has a doggie door or frozen Kong. He is house and crate trained.
Mackleroy is very intelligent, he knows to go to the bathroom on command and is also familiar with sit, stay and bedtime. He can be excitable, so he benefits from a stable routine and consistent rules and expectations from his family.
Mackleroy will need a family that will maintain his training because he is smart enough to attempt to make his people do what he wants them to do, if he doesn’t have clear expectations for his behaviour. Therefore, we would recommend that he goes to a new home familiar with GSD and their training or attends a dog obedience class for socialisation and stimulation (a good social outing for the owner also).
We have not had Mackleroy near young children but think he would be good once they get to know each other but may be too boisterous at times for very young children. We don’t know much about his past except he wasn’t well trained when he arrived with SODR, but he now knows he is not allowed on indoor furniture, he walks/ heels well (unless distracted, further work needed) and is pretty well behaved at home.
Whilst Mackleroy’s parentage is uncertain, many people have asked us if he is a Belgian Malinois. His temperament and behaviour are exactly as per the Belgian breed descriptions. Please research this breed to learn of the traits.
When putting in an application, please include some information about the people in your home and your experience with large intelligent dogs.
