About Bear
Bear will require:
* Arctic breed experience is essential, preferably with Malamutes. Homes with experience
with an anxious dog will be given priority
* Any children to be in their teens
* No cats, pocket pets or other animals
* A home as an only dog
* Daily walks, always on lead
* A reasonably large yard with grass areas for digging and an undercover area for shelter
* Fences and gates will need to be at least 6 foot high, secure and dig-proof
We are looking for a very special home to help Bear, who is currently in a regional shelter and in desperate need of a forever or foster family.
Applicants need to be dedicated and experienced with the Malamute breed traits, and be willing to commit to ongoing training to improve Bear's manners.
He will need to go into an only dog home as he is not comfortable around other dogs at this stage, and there also needs to be no cats or other small animals. His boisterous nature means that any children must be in their teens, and he will require a reasonable sized yard with secure dig proof fencing that is a minimum of 6 foot high.
The following information has been provided by the shelter about Bear's background and temperament:
Bear came into the shelter locked in chains which had to be cut off him. To prevent him escaping, he had been chained up and restrained for a period of time, so as you can imagine he was very scared and wary of humans. He is not comfortable being examined by the vet but has bonded well with his carer, who has spent the time earning his trust and making him feel comfortable around her.
If you have treats, he is extremely interested in what you have to offer. He knows sit and shake, but he is a typical puppy who hasn’t been shown right from wrong. He gets excitable and wants to play, but then forgets how big and strong he is, and has a little trouble working out if its play time or time to calm down and behave, which can seem a little overwhelming to the uninitiated. He can be a bit talkative and mouthy as well, and at times is unsure if you are wanting to be his friend or foe.
He is happy around people he knows, but can be aloof around others, which is why he needs a firm but also gentle owner who understands the breed to guide him through this puppy stage and get him back on track to where he has every potential to be.
