About Axel
AXEL is ready to start his search for his perfect match. Axel is a Red Heeler x Ridgeback who is super smart, keen to please and needs a very specific home.
Axel is: Loyal. Faithful. Protective. Patient. Kind. Loveable. Cuddly. Gentle. Smart. Funny. Well mannered. Good at recall. Good at staying within boundaries if that be at home or when playing if its clearly pointed out to him. Picks new things up very quickly. Loves a laugh and a chat. He never destroys anything at all. Wonderful at sitting at roadside curbs before walking across safely. He knows he gets a pat on the head if sitting. Also sits and waits patiently to be asked to eat.
The home we are looking for is:
🐶 A home with space - preferably small acreage or a farm.
🐶 Somewhere to swim (dam or river is fine with him). Axel loves to go for a swim.
🐶 Plenty of balls and sticks for fetching.
🐶 Axel loves to hangout with Older children/teenagers that are dog savvy and have a good throwing arm for the ball.
🐶 Plenty of human contact and two walks per day or time training - loves to learn.
🐶 Currently Axel is walked with a head halter /Halti which he walks perfectly on. Loose lead and checking in with his human.
🐶 Axel needs to be an only pet. He is dog selective and gets tired of other dogs, so whilst he has a doggy friend he has playdates with, they don't live together.
Specific things to know about Axel.
👌When new people come to the home he needs slow careful introduction time. If he gets startled or hurried he can bristle up and bark at them, especially if he is between the new people & his people. Axel is better left to make his own way to someone new, no good if new people go up to him with their hand out.
👌 Axel is happy to meet other dogs while on the lead, but he can still be unsure of them and react. Axel is not fond of all dogs so a Dog Parks is a no go zone.
👌Axel is not keen on going into the vet clinic. He becomes very anxious. We are continuing to work on that element with him.
👌 Axel has a strong protection element to him. He can get very concerned if a small child is crying or upset. That is his beautiful caring nature.
👌Introducing to another dog. Once again needs to be done slowly over time. On lead at first while gauging behaviour. He has been near cats and mostly doesn’t notice them while out walking, but occasionally does make a move toward them.
Axel's Loves:
❤ Chasing balls and playing with his favourite toys.
❤ Swimming by himself or with another dog he has grown close too.
❤ Supervised play dates with dog friend he has built up a relationship and trust with.
❤ Loves going fishing. He does have a habit of trying to chase the Bait and hook into the water as it is being cast over his head.
❤ Loves his daily brushing.
❤ Hanging out with humans as much as is possible.
❤ Getting lots of praise and shaking hands after being praised.
❤ Getting excited when you come home after going out.
❤ Eating only when hungry.
Axel has had two failed adoptions and that has increased his anxiety. Axel bonds strongly to his humans.
Axel is now on the medication Lovan which helps him regulate his anxiety. Axel will need to remain on his Lovan medication for the forseeable future. Only when he is well established in his new home 4-5 months would a review of this medication be advised.
Axel is an impecably trained and devoted dog. For the right human he will be a devoted companion for life.
Axel's adoption fee is $600 and he goes to his new home flea and worm treated, vaccinated, desexed and microchipped.

Adoption details
We like to take the personal approach where a person sends an email of interest around an animal and then we will follow up with phone discussions and email exploration through a survey.
Please note we are a small group of volunteers that balances the administrative side with the care of the animals.
Please only apply for one of our animals if you are genuinely interested in them.
We expect the prospective owner to travel to meet the animal and we are open to trial periods to ensure we have the match right.
