About Ernie
Meet Ernie, an absolute character who is small in size but fierce in heart. This little boy was from an unplanned litter of pups. At a couple of months of age, he was dropped at the vet where he was surrendered over to SAFE. We have adored him ever since.
As much as we would love to say that Ernie is as sweet as sugar, he does have some behavioural issues that will need to be addressed. We would ask of his new family that he will be enrolled in to some training whether it be one on one or puppy school training. Ernie has so much potential and we have faith he can be the greatest companion with some exposure to different situations as well as some professional guidance.
Ernie has been fostered with a range of dogs being big, small, young and old. He has been fine with all of his foster friends however he can get jealous when another dog is getting attention leading him to bark and nudge the other dog out the way. He is also very playful so if he has a dog friend they will need to be tolerant of his puppy-self.
Ernie loves to have a snuggle on the couch with his family and tends to attach to the female of the house. He loves playing with his toys and having fun. Ernie has a secret talent of being an acrobat, he doesn't walk down steps or onto couches, he must fly through the air with the biggest over-exaggerated jump he can do. He will definitely make you laugh.
As mentioned, Ernie does have some fear-based behaviours that need to be worked on. He has shown to be timid of new people. If a stranger is to lean over his head to give him a pat, he tends to snap at the air in belief that this person may harm him. He will need slow introductions with new people and they will need to give him space until he feels comfortable to receive a pat. Being anxious, his senses are heightened which means he can get overstimulated by situations. For example, when a car goes past on his walk, as it approaches close to him he will lunge at it, meaning he will need to be walked on a good harness.
However, Ernie can run freely in parks or grassed areas and will return when his name is called.
The most important thing we are looking for in Ernie's future home, is a family who are willing to work with him. Experience with dogs and the ability to read animal's signals is important. If Ernie doesn't like something he will let you know with signs such as a growl. The fact that he can give you these signs is wonderful as this will be what helps you to identify his fears. Ernie has come such a long way since he came into our care and has so much love to give.
