About Milly
NAME: Milly
BEFORE SAFE ESPERANCE: Came to SAFE Esperance from the pound.
BREED: Terrier X
Terrier breed traits: They come in all shapes and sizes and were bred for different reasons but many were for farm work or ratting. Today they are mainly companions. Terriers are generally high energy, very bright and quick to learn but can be stubborn. They have strong personalities and a sense of fun and want to be included in everything you do. Don't take on a terrier unless you really do want a companion.
ASSETS: Affectionate, sensitive, active, extremely intelligent, sweet and playful. Milly was very fearful when she first came into care and has taken a bit of time to settle down and feel secure. She still gets fearful around new people and situations so her new owner will need to take things very slowly with her.
FAVOURITE THINGS: She’s a very clued-up, intelligent girl and likes to be around her people, although she can be selective about who she likes and what she wants to do. She loves to play with balls and her cuddly teddies, although she does destroy the teddies at every opportunity! She can be a bit of a 'secret' chewer and gets into all sorts of things, so her new owner will need to keep an eye on this. She’s also never happier than when she’s curled up with her person for cuddles. She loves to be loved.
ENDEARING FEATURES: She’s very loving and loyal once you have gained her trust.
OTHER ANIMALS: She gets on well with other dogs after gentle introduction and loves to play with them. She gets on well with cats and plays with one of the cats in her foster home, so she could live with a dog-savvy feline, again after gentle, closely supervised introductions.
GENERAL INFO: Milly is still learning to walk nicely on the lead. She’s housetrained and is generally quiet but will bark when someone is at the door. Her command training is coming along nicely but will need further work from her new owner. She’s not a fan of being left alone and will dig and chew shoes in protest at not being near her people.
ESSENTIALS for Milly:
o An active, loving, calm, dog experienced home where someone is there for most of the day, and can take her with them when they go out. – she is particularly fond of men so would ideally go to a male home. Milly is initially wary of women and will take her time to trust them. She will need a good amount of exercise each day to burn off her energy.
o Bona fide training classes where Milly can learn by gentle positive reinforcement and gain the confidence she lacks. She is a bright cookie and very agile so learning agility or another activity will relieve her boredom and destructive behaviour. If she is to be an only dog in her new family she will also need regular playdates with other dogs to keep her happy.
o A high fenced, secure yard with some grass and interesting things for her to sniff and explore. This is really important as she can be a bit of an escape artist if left alone for too long.
o Milly needs to be allowed to be inside or out as she chooses, to sleep inside at night and to be included as part of the family.
Milly would be best suited to an adult only home. She could live with a youngish doggy friend that she can play with after gentle introduction.
If Milly sounds like the perfect girl for you, please send an enquiry and we’ll be in touch soon.
