About Claus
Claus is an approximately 2-year-old Great Dane cross Mastiff, although it’s hard to tell that he is a cross breed! He is a giant dog, about the size of a smaller female pure Great Dane. His life has been incredibly limited until coming into foster care where he’s started learning about the big wide world. He’s still very young at heart and nervous in new situations, however he’s coming along beautifully with his training with his very dedicated foster parents. Extra love and time are needed for Claus’s training as he is deaf.
Claus is full of character, so there’s never a dull moment. There’s so much for him to learn and master and being deaf, means he needs not only intensive training but also a huge amount of patience.
He is over enthusiastic with other dogs but has fitted in well with another young female staffy foster girl. Not so well with the other male dogs. A similar female could prove to be helpful for Claus to learn the ropes, but a buddy would need to be either young and well trained or still young at heart and very accepting.
Dog parks and the like are not suitable options for Claus. He's currently highly reactive to new dogs when he sees them out and about only able to pass by calmly at a very generous distance.
If Claus was to join a home with another dog, it would need two handlers, so outings are kept manageable and controlled to build the positive new experiences. Claus has been taught to walk nicely on lead already, but the world can still be an overwhelming place for him. An experienced handler will need to continue to expose him to new things slowly. He requires 1 – 2 walks and/or training sessions a day to keep up his exposure and burn his puppy-like energy. You’ll find he is a very clever boy who just needs a good routine and clear boundaries.
We have learnt that Claus needs to be kept safe in a yard with full height solid fencing. Open fencing makes it hard for him to relax and would make a settling period extremely difficult. Shorter fences only give him an option to get over or through. Currently in his foster home, he is relaxed and content although this took a little time. As with all dogs, it takes 3 days to settle, 3 weeks to show true personality and 3 months for them to realise it’s their home.
Claus is now toilet trained however may need some assistance again when he joins his forever home. He’s slowly learning his manners but don’t be surprised if you turn around and he’s looking down at you from the dining room table or he’s moving your bed covers about the house :O
Claus is currently living harmoniously with cats. Given that these cats are used to living with big boisterous dogs! He is trusting of his people once the bond is established but we feel it’s best for him to join a home without children. Remember that with rescue dogs like Claus things just take time but the satisfaction of the companionship and love you’ll get from Claus is well worth the wait!
A deaf dog is not for the average pet home but if you’re up for a bit of a new challenge, Claus has responded exceptionally to his training. He is incredibly loving and a whole lot of fun.
Claus is currently under SAFE Metro’s care and GDLAWA are assisting with his adoption. Please get in touch with Lisa to discuss if you think Claus could be for you.
