About Dougie
Meet Dougie, the smoochie South African Mastiff X. Dougie is 4-years-old and has spent the last year learning how to live “the good life”. This boy loves a sunny patch in a quiet yard to snooze in and a good belly rub in his bed. Dougie has taken very well to training and is very treat motivated. He has learnt several commands, including ‘sit’, ‘drop’, ‘leave it’, ‘yes’, ‘wait’, ‘paw’, ‘tummy’ and ‘yours’. Dougie is still working on his recall as he can get distracted by an interesting smell or noise.
Dougie can be shy and uncertain at first but bonds very strongly with his human once the trust is built. A year ago, Dougie was terrified of his surroundings, having not had exposure to suburban living or other dogs. He has come leaps and bounds since, but can still get spooked by a big noise. Dougie is a textbook ‘skater hater’ and reacts to things that rattle like scooters and skateboards, but with continued training he will undoubtedly be happy to live in harmony with them. Dougie currently has medication to support his training and lower his anxiety. He is an absolute champ taking his tablets and will happily accept them sandwiched between his kibble.
Dougie is a natural guardian as such, we are looking for an experienced home that has previously had Mastiffs and understands their natural protective nature. He has displayed some aggressive behaviour, especially towards women, so would be best suited to an experienced male handler who will be persistent and patient in continuing his training. Dougie quite likes other dogs but is still learning how to meet them on the lead out and about however, this can be avoided with slow and calm interactions. He is overall a very friendly and loving dog.
