About Charley
Charley is a gentle and endearing boy who will need a home where his new owner will let him settle in whilst he bonds very quickly he will take a bit longer to build up his trust in a new environment however he will happily follow you everywhere in the meantime.
He's the perfect companion for someone who wants a quiet, friendly pet with good house manners. Charley is very loyal and will want to spend plenty of time with his family so he would be great in a home where someone will be around most of the day. He is getting better at coping with being left alone for short periods but this is something his new owners will have to continue to work with Charlie with this.
He likes being outside when you are but mostly he is an inside dog so must go to a home where he is permitted access inside and out at all times, with a garden that he can explore although a villa or townhouse in a quiet area would also suit and a home where he is permitted to cuddle on the couch of a night is also a must.
Charley’s carer has found 2/3 40 min or so walks suit Charlie well. A morning walk after breakfast is best and helps settle him for the rest of the day. He really enjoys bushwalks or places with obstacles. His carer has been taking him to a local recreational park and he has a blast shuffling between rocks and smelling everything. A home in a quiet area with quiet streets or wider areas and a home that can take him exploring on bushwalks would best suit Charley. A home in a place like the Blue Mountains or another area with easy access to bushwalks would make the perfect home for Charlie.
Charley walks well on a harness but as he has had a rocky past living with another dog in his previous home, tension comes up when he sees other dogs on his walk. He’s getting better at watching dogs and staying calm at a distance but has shown signs of fear aggression when they come too close. His carer believes Charlie can continue to improve with continued socialisation.
Seemingly he wasn't trained in the past, however, he loves training and is quick to pick things up. Very food motivated by small pieces of treats and despite his age has picked up basic commands such as sit and lay down very quickly, he has hit a 100% success rate in going to his bed when asked and is toilet trained if you set him up to succeed in his new environment.
He does have an odd behaviour of peeing in his water bowl as a result of anxiety we believe from the dogs in his previous home. His carer has found that if she lets him outside immediately after his meal this seems to have curbed this behaviour quickly.
Charlie would prefer a home without another dog so he can get all of your love and attention and as we do not know how he is with cats a home without cats would be best.
He likes small pieces of dried sweet potato and raw chicken wings as treats and small amounts of cream cheese smeared onto a lick mat. His carer has been cooking his meals for him primarily with beef mince or shredded chicken, black beans, carrots, kale, brown rice and he loves this and this diet has improved his coat which was dry and brittle when he first came into care. Charley will need to go to a home that will continue to feed him on the above diet or similar.
Charley also loves to be groomed and will need his eyes cleaned every couple of days. His ears are great as they stand up so he doesn't encounter the usual maltese problem of droopy ears prone to infection. Bathing is quite easy to, he just doesn't like water around his eyes and will lay down for you to blow dry him.
When Charlie first came into care about 6 weeks ago he was quite frantic. However, with some patience, he calmed down in a short time. There will of course be a transition period in his new home
Please send as much information on the home you are able to provide Charlie so that we can see if you are a good match.
