Lester is an excitable dog who is very true to his working breed heritage. He is highly intelligent and knows several commands. He learns new commands quickly and is motivated by food.
Lester loves snacks and he is very responsive to this when he is calm. He loves having a pat but also loves the opportunity to run. He has learnt recently to enjoy cuddles, and will need a family eager to help him learn to relax and practice self control every bit as much as give in to his inner turbo charge!
Lester requires exercise for both body and mind every day – and needs both in equal amounts! He's currently not interested in toys or playing fetch.
He walks well on the lead in quiet environments, but is stimulated by all things exciting (scooters, bikes, other dogs) so will need ongoing training in this area, and somebody realistic about how the intensity of excitable happenings in urban environments affects dogs as hypervigilant as he can be.
Lester has not yet had any interactions with children; however, he gets very overwhelmed and overstimulated with any semi-loud noises so young children would definitely not be suitable. When Lester is being spoken to it works best if it’s in a low tone, to help keep him relaxed. When being patted it works best if it’s soft and slow for the same reason. He goes from slow to turbo in a second!
Ideally, his forever home would have a medium-to-large yard with 6ft fences.
He may be best as an only dog as he can be reactive around other dogs when overstimulated (such as if the other dog is racing about and playing ball or he’s super over excited). His foster family are working on this with Lester currently and he is showing improvements, but if sharing with another dog a calm adult female who doesn’t mind the herding dog style of play, and calm competent human leadership will be essential.
He also has a tendency to herd other animals, so it is unlikely he'll be suitable with cats or chickens.
Lester still needs further training and support, and a family who can take the time to continue his training will be rewarded with a great dog true to his heritage.
