About Patch
Patch is a beautiful nine-year-old tricolour blue heeler. He is a highly active family companion who has unfortunately outgrown our young family. It is with a heavy heart that we have to put our child first, as Patch can be very rough and unpredictably timid around very young children, going as far as to ignore them completely or dominate them with non-aggressive rough play. Before we adopted him as a youngster, we were informed that he was tortured in a crate or enclosure by children. As result he can appear aggressive when fenced off from children. He has never attacked a person or other animal, even when badly provoked. He will always seek the guidance of his handler and if they are calm, he is. He can be around children on a lead, but ideally, he should not be around them at all, as they clearly give him anxiety. Oddly enough, he will avoid cattle (and pigs) at all costs.
Patch is incredibly loyal to whoever is handling him. While happy with us, he has shown his ability to adapt to strangers with ease, so long as he is getting lots of love and attention. He can't get enough of your affection. He has been taught all basic commands and will follow them when used sternly. He is a very curious, intelligent and STRONG dog. He does not like hose water but he loves swimming in local dams and rivers. The bigger the adventure, the better. He will walk further than you ever could, but will stop and stay with you whenever you need to rest. The more I write, the harder this is. Unfortunately for all of us, including our other nine-year-old heeler, he has more energy than we're able to spend.
The home he needs has to be free of young children. He is great with teenagers and protective of family members and property. He will bark if strangers come close to the family perimeter, but he will stop when commanded to. He will not bark at neighbours or regular visitors. He can be a little possessive of his toys when you're playing, but that is because he is just a big puppy when it comes to playtime. He cannot be left with any toys or anything he can destroy. No amount of exercise will stop his curiosity, and unfortunately, he doesn't realise how big and strong he is. Patch is ready for a young couple, though ideally a young woman, couple or a house full of women would be perfect. The next best thing would be a farm or smaller property where he can be fenced in but freely roam. While he has lived in an urban setting with limited space for short periods, he will need to be exercised daily for at least an hour to maintain his quality of life.
Whoever is lucky enough to be in his company will be happier for it. He will do whatever it takes to have your approval and keep it. He has been loved and we want only the best for him.
